What are engineering services?

Engineering services refer to a broad range of professional activities provided by engineers and technical experts to support the planning, design, development, and maintenance of infrastructure, products, or systems. These services can include consulting, project management, design and drafting, feasibility studies, testing, and inspection across sectors such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, and energy. Engineering services help organizations solve technical problems, comply with regulations, and implement innovative solutions efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in engineering services?

To thrive in Engineering Services, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software, project management tools, and compliance with technical regulations is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking skills help professionals excel in cross-functional environments. These skills are vital for delivering innovative, safe, and efficient engineering solutions that meet client and regulatory expectations.

How do engineering services professionals typically collaborate with cross-functional teams within a company?

Engineering services professionals often work closely with teams such as product development, operations, quality assurance, and project management. Effective collaboration involves regular communication to ensure project requirements are clear, timelines are met, and technical standards are adhered to. These professionals may participate in design reviews, provide technical input during meetings, and coordinate with other departments to resolve any challenges that arise during the project lifecycle. This cross-functional interaction not only supports project success but also helps engineering services staff broaden their knowledge and build valuable relationships across the organization.

What is the difference between Engineering Services vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering ServicesMechanical Engineering

Engineering Services is a broad field encompassing various engineering disciplines, including mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineers often work within engineering services firms or in industries like manufacturing and aerospace. While engineering services focus on providing consulting, design, and project management, mechanical engineering emphasizes designing and analyzing mechanical systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often overlap in work environments, but engineering services typically involve client-facing consulting and project coordination.

What are 20 careers in engineering services?

Engineering services encompass a wide range of careers including civil engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, structural engineer, environmental engineer, software engineer, project engineer, design engineer, quality engineer, systems engineer, process engineer, instrumentation engineer, consulting engineer, manufacturing engineer, test engineer, safety engineer, automation engineer, maintenance engineer, research engineer, and field engineer. These roles often require technical skills, relevant certifications, and proficiency with engineering tools and software. They are found across industries such as construction, manufacturing, technology, and energy.

What do engineering services do?

Engineering services involve designing, developing, and maintaining systems, structures, or products across various engineering disciplines. Professionals in this field use technical skills, engineering principles, and tools like CAD software to solve problems and improve efficiency in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and technology.

Job description

Overview

ROLE AT A GLANCE:The Staff Engineer is a hands-on senior technical leader within Herbalife's Digital Technologyorganization, operating at the first individual-contributor level whose impact spans multiple teamswithin a domain - positioned above Senior Engineer and below Principal Engineer on the technicaltrack. Embedded directly with product engineering teams, the Staff Engineer sets technical direction, provides architectural guidance, drives adoption of modern platform standards and engineeringpractices, and mentors senior engineers across multiple teams within a domain or office. This is apure individual contributor role - influence comes through technical depth, clarity, and leadershiprather than positional authority. Staff Engineers stay hands-on, writing production code regularly(roughly half of their time) while devoting the balance to architecture, technical strategy, and cross-team alignment; they serve as the technical conscience and quality bar-setter for their area andpartner with engineering leadership to translate enterprise technical vision into execution.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT:ย  Provide hands-on technical leadership and set technical direction across multiple teams withina domain or office, writing production-grade code roughly half of the time, reviewing others'work, and modeling what great engineering looks like. Drive adoption of platform standards, modern tooling, and engineering best practices -version control, testing, build/deploy, observability, and security - and implement the technicalbaseline through code review, pairing, and proactive intervention. Lead resolution of the most complex, ambiguous technical problems in the area, serving asthe point of escalation and driving root-cause analysis and systemic improvement forproduction incidents. Mentor and level up engineers across the domain, including senior engineers, through pairing, design collaboration, and deliberate knowledge transfer - with impact measured by thegrowth of the engineers around them. Lead the technical health and velocity of the domain, identifying recurring problems andbuilding shared tooling, automation, runbooks, and training that lift the whole team. Partner with the Sr. Director and Distinguished Engineer to translate enterprise-level technicalstrategy and roadmap into on-the-ground execution, while providing bottom-up input onplatform priorities based on the team's real needs. Build cross-team alignment and communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineersand non-technical stakeholders, producing the design docs, decision records, anddocumentation that keep teams aligned. Raise the engineering baseline beyond your immediate team by creating training content, running working sessions, and bringing modern industry practices, tools, and patterns into theorganization. Additional duties as assigned.

TEAM DYNAMICS: You'll be embedded within Herbalife's distributed Digital Technology organization, workinghands-on across teams spanning the US, Guadalajara, and Bangalore during a multi-yearplatform transformation. The environment is collaborative and code-first: you'll pair withengineers daily, partner closely with product, security, and enterprise architecture, and workdirectly with the Sr. Director of Engineering and Distinguished Engineer to bring modernengineering practices to a team that is eager to level up. Comfort working across time zonesand cultures is crucial.

LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A - This is a pure individual contributor role with no direct reports or people-managementaccountability. Leadership is exercised through technical influence, mentorship, and settingthe engineering quality bar rather than positional authority.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:ย Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, orequivalent practical experience.Experience 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on work inmodern web application development, platform engineering, or cloud-native architecture, withat least 2 years operating at a senior level driving technical decisions across more than oneteam. Hands-on experience adopting or extending modern platform and developer-experiencetooling: CI/CD pipelines, shared libraries and service templates, API gateways, contracttesting, and observability (e.g., OpenTelemetry). Working knowledge of distributed systems patterns - event-driven architecture, messagestreaming, synchronous vs. asynchronous tradeoffs, and service-to-service authentication. Track record of writing architecture and design documentation - decision records, runbooks- that engineers actively use and that is maintained as a living standard. Experience using engineering health metrics (deployment frequency, change failure rate, incident volume) to guide technical decisions within a team or domain. Demonstrable experience driving cross-team technical alignment, adopting modernengineering practices (trunk-based development, CI/CD, observability, automated testing),and mentoring senior engineers. Experience working across distributed teams and time zonesstrongly preferred

Skills/Certificationsย

Deep expertise in at least one engineering domain (frontend, backend, platform, or data) withstrong working knowledge across the full stack. Fluency with modern software development practices and AI-assisted development, with theability to model their effective use for the team. Strong architecture and design skills, with experience authoring technical decision recordsand design documentation that others reference. Excellent communication and mentorship skills - patient, empathetic, and committed toknowledge transfer; able to influence without positional authority.
