Junior Systems Engineer

The Junior Systems Engineer will assist in various systems engineering processes in support of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate in its effort to combat the catastrophic use of weapon of mass destruction within the US and its territories. 

In this role you will…. 

  • Provide administrative, programmatic, systems engineering, research analysis, test management and scientific support services including assistance required by the federal staff to effectively administer and manage programs and projects as well as to contribute to scientific and engineering assessments of existing and evolving counter-WMD technologies.  
  • Follow established DHS Acquisition and Systems Engineer Lifecycle (SELC) policies, procedures and frameworks to develop, acquire and deploy counter- WMD Detection systems to our Federal, State , Local and Tribal operational partners.
  • Work with Project Manager to develop project documentation requirements and schedules. 
  • Conduct systems engineering tasks in support of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) systems.
  • Provide Research & Development, Test & Evaluation, Acquisition, Program Integration & Mission support or Front Office support as needed and assigned.
  • Responsibilities may include: 
    • Develop Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Integrated Master Plans (IMS) and resource-loaded integrated master schedules for acquisition programs as well as Test and Evaluation Master Plans (TEMPs)
    • Develop interface management plans for the acquisition of systems. 
    • Derive and decompose system functional requirements to field an acquisition system (e.g., Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) develop and analysis)
    • Coordinate with Government personnel to ensure requirements are met. 
    • Develop disposition plans for disposal of systems when end-of-life is reached
    • Analyze proposed systems to determine capability of proposed systems to meet end-user requirements
    • Prepare and submit acquisition artifacts for oversight reviews and develop briefings for oversight officials

Experience Requirements:

  • 0-3 years in systems engineering or related work

Education Requirements:

  • BS degree, or equivalent (4 years of work experience), or MA/MS degree or equivalent (2 years of work experience) in chemical, biological or systems engineering or related discipline 
  • Chem-Bio or Rad -Nuclear experience strongly preferred

Certification Requirements:

  • N/A

Security Clearance Requirements: 

  • DOD Secret Clearance is preferred
  • Ability to obtain a DOD Secret Clearance
  • Ability to obtain DHS Suitability 

Other Requirements:

  • May require sedentary work at least 50% of the time 
  • Ability to manage stress with a high degree of maturity/professionalism
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and leadership skills and the ability to work well with others
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
