A Brief Summary of This Position:

This General Manager position in Salina, KS has full Profit/Loss (P/L) responsibility for the site. The incumbent is responsible for all the physical and human resources within that group, strategic development, planning, execution and tactical direction, marketing and sales, budgeting and capital utilization, business expansion and new construction. Manages through delegating authority to key functional area employees.

Essential Functions:

The position of General Manager (GM) reports directly to the Regional Director responsible for overseeing site. Directs and coordinates activities of the organization to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations and maximize profits. Autonomously manages operations giving guidance and direction to all key functional area managers and supervisors. Directs the Sales employee(s) in sales and marketing functions, staffing, pricing, labor, asset and inventory management. Supports the Regional Director with special projects or assignments, as requested. Responsible for the operating performance of the material control and manufacturing functions including the full range of activities and processes, engineering, employee safety, purchasing, production planning, scheduling, dispatching, receiving, materials handling, inventory control, stores, shipping, and coatings operations.

Demonstrate visible leadership and accountability for Valmont’s Health & Safety Vision and Zero Harm strategy by performing the following: Ensure risks are identified, controlled, and continuously reduced throughout the site. Ensure compliance with Valmont EHS standards and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Ensure implementation and sustainment of Valmont’s Life‑Saving Rules and Stop Work Authority programs. Ensure incidents identify root causes, have effective corrective actions, and prevent recurrence, while supporting site responsibilities for workers' compensation, return-to-work efforts, and employee recovery. Provide support, resources, and active engagement for your site to achieve EHS objectives. Foster leadership accountability and employee engagement to support EHS excellence and continuous improvement Ensure all matters of environmental compliance, personal health, safety of employees, sustainability considerations, , and effective use of EHS management systems are integrated into operational decision‑making and site management practices.

Responsible to ensure a lean manufacturing environment including standardized operating procedures, continuous improvements and delivery of improved business results. Must seek to standardize/optimize operations and procedures, so that best practice operations are easily transferable to other Coatings sites, new acquisitions, spin‑offs and new businesses. The incumbent is challenged to look for areas within the Division to improve revenues and efficiencies and transfer effective management practices that help meet Valmont business objectives, including the development of new applications, technological innovations and business expansion focus.

Other Important Details about the Role:

Ensure business unit goals are met by establishing sales and manufacturing goals, policies and procedures as well as ensuring that all department heads are accountable to achieve these results. Promote organization in industry, manufacturing or trade associations. To lead the site’s effort to be the innovative market leader by driving unsurpassed services and applications into production to meet the needs and to exceed the expectations of the customer. Participate in sales and customer contact and follow‑up both proactively and as necessary. Ensure the site’s effective operations by monitoring results, comparing actual performance to established standards and taking appropriate action to forestall or correct problem situations revealed through operating results. Rolling out lean manufacturing principles, standard work, and problem resolution strategies and engaging the workforce in day‑to‑day continuous improvement activities. Conduct continuous cost reduction programs throughout the organization and trains all employees to participate in continuous improvement efforts. Ensure the profitability of the site by directing and monitoring activities to achieve satisfactory operation and growth performance as measured in terms of return on investment, profit margins, manufacturing and labor costs and increased sales volume. Ensure the sound financial position of the site by overseeing the development of annual operating budgets of costs and expenses and collaborate in the development and presentation of strategic plans, long range plans and annual operating plans. Direct and coordinate promotion of services performed to develop new markets, increase share of market and obtain competitive position in industry. Ensure a safe working environment by overseeing and directing appropriate action on all matters related to personal health and safety of employees and of the environment so that all applicable regulations are met or exceeded. Also, ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations issued by local, state and federal regulatory agencies. Oversee physical condition of facility(s) and directs maintenance through a systematic program of repairs or through initiation of fixed capital requests when this action is economic or appropriate. Develop and maintain human capital capable of achieving objectives through appropriate structuring, staffing, developing, appraising and rewarding. Develop key employee talents necessary to obtain short- and long-range goals by effective direction, counseling, and training. Develop organization structures and staffing requirements.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

Preferred Bachelors with 7+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 9+ years relevant experience or 11+ years of relevant experience Ability to understand, oversee and direct the utilization of sophisticated financial analysis and models in the evaluation of current and potential business units, products and markets. A clear understanding of regulatory, societal and economic drivers and their impact on the business unit. Must have the ability to read, analyze and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to articulate well at all levels of the organization, write speeches and presentation materials and effectively present information. Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw timely/valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Must have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and work well with others. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite products (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook) Proven track record in lean manufacturing methodology and tools including standard work, continuous improvement, problem resolution and delivery of results positively affecting the bottom line of the organization Ability to travel locally as needed is required. Ability to travel to other Coatings locations or to trade shows and/or American Galvanizers Association Technical Forums, approximately 15%, as required.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

Master’s Degree Bilingual in English and Spanish A good understanding of Visual Shop, QAD and other accounting software

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Some of the working conditions for this position is in a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, cold, heat, noise. The General Manager will work in both the office and shop environment. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. 15% travel is required for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
