What is an engineering MEP?

Engineering MEP professionals specialize in Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems within buildings and infrastructure projects. They are responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems like HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), electrical wiring, lighting, water supply, drainage, and fire protection. MEP engineers work closely with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure that these critical systems are efficient, safe, and compliant with building codes and regulations. Their expertise is essential in the construction and operation of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP engineer?

To thrive as an MEP Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification such as a PE license. Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems like Revit, and industry codes is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills set top performers apart in this multidisciplinary field. These skills ensure the successful design, coordination, and implementation of complex building systems, which are crucial for safe and efficient construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by MEP engineers when coordinating with other disciplines on construction projects?

MEP engineers often encounter challenges such as resolving spatial conflicts with architectural and structural elements, aligning schedules with other trades, and ensuring all systems are properly integrated without clashes. Effective communication and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools are essential to minimize errors and rework. Collaborating closely with architects, structural engineers, and contractors is key to identifying issues early and maintaining project timelines.

What is the difference between Engineering Mep vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineering MepMechanical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in MEP engineering, certifications like LEED or PE often preferredRequires a degree in mechanical engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and coordinating HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems in buildingsDesigning mechanical systems, machinery, or components across various industries
Industry UsageCommonly used in construction, building services, and facilities managementUsed across manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and building systems

Engineering MEP focuses on the design and coordination of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within buildings, often requiring specialized certifications. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing mechanical systems across multiple industries, with a primary focus on machinery and mechanical components. While both roles require engineering degrees, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

How much do engineering MEP engineers get paid?

Engineering MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Senior or specialized MEP engineers with certifications can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000. Salaries also vary based on the size of the firm and the engineer's expertise with design software and building codes.

Job description

Description:

Company Overview:

Elite Marine A/C is the trusted partner of captains, owners, and shipyards for HVAC service and refit on superyachts. We’re hiring a Mechanical / MEP Engineer to serve as the technical backbone of our refit quoting and project engineering — translating client requirements into precisely-engineered, install-ready solutions on existing vessels. This role advances EMAC’s mission of delivering best-in-class service to large yachts by pairing engineering rigor with a white-glove customer experience: more accurate quotes, defensible specs, and client-ready renderings that help captains and owners see exactly what they’re buying before work begins.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engineer complete HVAC and mechanical refit solutions for yachts and superyachts integrating supplier-provided HVAC equipment and Spot Zero (sister company) water purification systems into existing vessels — sizing, layout, and serviceability all considered.
  • Perform engineering calculations including HVAC heat load calcs, equipment sizing, duct and airflow sizing, chilled water and seawater piping sizing, and condensate management.
  • Size electrical loads, wiring, breakers, and panel requirements for installed systems; coordinate with existing shore power, generator, and onboard electrical infrastructure.
  • Design plumbing and piping layouts that meet performance, code, and serviceability requirements within the constraints of existing vessel structure and machinery spaces.
  • Develop 3D models and layout drawings in SolidWorks, and produce client-ready renderings (KeyShot or equivalent) for inclusion in proposals — giving EMAC a visual quoting advantage that competitors don’t offer.
  • Build accurate, line-item Bills of Materials (BOMs) that drive precise quotes, support sales conversations, and minimize mid-project change orders.
  • Conduct on-vessel surveys to measure, photograph, and assess existing systems, structural constraints, and installation paths; verify field conditions before final design release.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, install crews, and Spot Zero engineering to ensure designs are buildable, profitable, and on-spec.
  • Maintain engineering documentation including drawing packages, install instructions, and as-built records to support service teams and downstream operations.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, MEP Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation); ability to produce client-ready renderings using KeyShot or an equivalent rendering tool.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC heat load calculations.
  • Demonstrated ability to size equipment, piping, ductwork, wiring, breakers, and supporting components for installed mechanical systems.
  • Experience producing accurate, line-item Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support quoting and procurement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting designs and quoting rationale to captains, owners, and project managers.
  • Hands-on, field-ready approach — willing to conduct surveys in engine rooms, machinery spaces, and other tight onboard environments.
  • Collaborative team player who works effectively across Sales, Operations, and field crews; detail-oriented and able to deliver under tight quoting deadlines.

PREFERRED

  • Direct experience with chilled water HVAC design (common in yacht HVAC).
  • Experience integrating third-party equipment

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • Ability to board and navigate yachts, including climbing ladders, working in confined engine rooms, and accessing below-deck mechanical spaces.
  • Comfortable working in outdoor marina and boatyard environments in South Florida’s climate.
  • Ability to lift to 85 lbs occasionally when handling equipment samples or measurement tools.
  • Split work environment: approximately 50% office/engineering and 50% field/client-facing.
  • Local travel in South Florida; up to 4 weeks/year domestic and international

Pre-Employment Conditions:

  • Background screening
  • Drug screening

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Monthly profit-sharing plan - an opportunity to share in the success and growth of the company
  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, vision, and life insurance (employee-only coverage)
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid holidays and PTO
