How much do engineering mep jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for engineering mep in Alabama is $133,119.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $105,600.00 and $156,800.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much do engineering MEP engineers get paid?

Engineering MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and project complexity. Senior or specialized MEP engineers with certifications can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $120,000. Salaries also vary based on the size of the firm and the engineer's expertise with design software and building codes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MEP engineer?

To thrive as an MEP Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification such as a PE license. Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems like Revit, and industry codes is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills set top performers apart in this multidisciplinary field. These skills ensure the successful design, coordination, and implementation of complex building systems, which are crucial for safe and efficient construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by MEP engineers when coordinating with other disciplines on construction projects?

MEP engineers often encounter challenges such as resolving spatial conflicts with architectural and structural elements, aligning schedules with other trades, and ensuring all systems are properly integrated without clashes. Effective communication and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools are essential to minimize errors and rework. Collaborating closely with architects, structural engineers, and contractors is key to identifying issues early and maintaining project timelines.

What is the difference between Engineering Mep vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineering MepMechanical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in MEP engineering, certifications like LEED or PE often preferredRequires a degree in mechanical engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesigning and coordinating HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems in buildingsDesigning mechanical systems, machinery, or components across various industries
Industry UsageCommonly used in construction, building services, and facilities managementUsed across manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and building systems

Engineering MEP focuses on the design and coordination of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within buildings, often requiring specialized certifications. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, designing mechanical systems across multiple industries, with a primary focus on machinery and mechanical components. While both roles require engineering degrees, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What is an engineering MEP?

Engineering MEP professionals specialize in Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems within buildings and infrastructure projects. They are responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems like HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), electrical wiring, lighting, water supply, drainage, and fire protection. MEP engineers work closely with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure that these critical systems are efficient, safe, and compliant with building codes and regulations. Their expertise is essential in the construction and operation of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings.

Job description

Description:

BLOX is creating the tools to convert a resistant Architecture Engineering and Construction Industry into a smart and efficient machine. For those motivated to play a part in that change, this is an exciting time at BLOX. In short, BLOX takes the most complicated parts of a hospital – headwalls, surgery ceilings, MEP racks, Central Energy Plants, exam rooms, bathrooms, etc. - designs them so that they can be removed from conventional construction, manufactures them as modules, transports and inserts them into the construction process to yield higher quality buildings that open significantly faster than those conventionally constructed. BLOX is both service and product that includes architecture, engineering, manufacturing, logistics and construction.

BLOX is looking for a talented, energetic Electrical Engineer to boost the Mechanical Electrical plumbing (MEP) team. This team is delivering a host of new buildings in multiple states for major healthcare clients. These buildings are designed, manufactured in sophisticated modular components and assembled on site for higher speed to market and superior quality at lower cost, with modern design aesthetics.

As an Electrical Engineer, you will work with the MEP team in a dynamic, rapid-growth work environment with a group of bright, talented engineers, architects, designers, builders, craftsmen and manufacturers. You will be challenged to develop your skills in a new field, taking a lead role in project delivery via the DMC methodology.

Responsibilities and tasks include:

· Design facility Electrical systems to meet client’s requirements in projects.

· Perform facility Electrical distribution system and equipment design for a wide range of projects, and collaborate with team engineers, architects, and detailers as needed to model elements into a cohesive facility model.

· Perform calculations, studies, and analysis of Electrical systems and equipment to create design solutions. Specific forms of analysis include power distribution system load, circuit and element sizing, overcurrent protective device selective coordination, and illumination.

· Layout of communications and alarm systems (e.g. fire alarm) and design of system single-line diagrams.

· Support production of projects including manufacturing design, computer modeling, and detailing of manufacturing and construction work scopes.

· Generate and maintain models used to create project permitting documents, manufacturing drawings and field shop drawings.

· Perform quality checks on their own work and participate in project-wide quality reviews of the design and drawings. Produce design in compliance with national and local codes and regulations.

· Collaborate with installers in manufacturing and construction to improve quality, flow and efficiency of implementation of the design.

· Collaborate with suppliers and vendors in developing specifications of the design and selection of equipment used in the facility systems.

Requirements:

Required Job Skills & Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Architectural Engineering

· Familiarity with 3D modeling and design software, esp. Revit

· Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

· Punctual and able to meet deadlines

· Conscientious and quality-oriented

Preferred:

· FE (NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering, EIT Engineer-in-training) on path to professional licensure

· Familiarity with facility electrical system analysis

· Familiarity with electrical codes and regulations e.g. National Electrical Code

Benefits:

BLOX offers the full spectrum of comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance. We also offer flexible spending accounts, paid time off, short term disability, long term disability, life insurance and a 401k plan.
