What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What is the difference between Engineering Manager vs Software Development Manager?

Work EnvironmentEngineering departments, cross-disciplinary teams, technical environmentsSoftware development teams, Agile/Scrum environments, coding-focused settings
Industry UsageCommon in tech, manufacturing, and engineering firmsPrimarily in tech companies, software firms, and IT services

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What do you do as an engineering manager?

An engineering manager oversees engineering teams, manages project timelines, allocates resources, and ensures technical goals are met. They coordinate between technical staff and other departments, often providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic planning. Strong communication, technical expertise, and management skills are essential for this role.

Job description

Moncton, NB | Permanent Full-Time | Employee-Owned Consulting Firm

Ready to lead and grow one of Atlantic Canada's premier structural engineering teams? GEMTEC is seeking a strategic, client-focused structural engineering leader to guide our Structural Division, mentor future leaders, strengthen relationships, and help shape the next stage of our growth across Atlantic Canada.

At GEMTEC, we offer something different: the scale and multidisciplinary depth to work on meaningful projects, with the agility, ownership mindset, and personal connection of a mid-sized, employee-owned firm. You will have the autonomy to influence strategy, develop people, build client trust, and contribute directly to long-term value for our employees, clients, and communities.

This is a leadership role for someone who enjoys building teams as much as delivering excellent technical work. You will be a visible leader in the business, working closely with senior leadership while guiding day-to-day operations, project delivery, growth, and culture within the Structural Division.

What You Will Lead

  • Develop and execute the Structural Division strategy in alignment with GEMTEC's corporate objectives.
  • Oversee structural engineering projects from proposal through completion, with a focus on quality, client service, and profitability.
  • Provide senior technical guidance on complex structural projects and support strong QA/QC practices.
  • Lead annual budgets, resource planning, workload management, and operational performance.
  • Grow relationships with municipal, provincial, federal, and private-sector clients, and lead key proposals.
  • Coach managers, project leads, and emerging leaders through recruitment, performance management, and succession planning.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Lead a growing division of 20 team members with established clients and a strong regional reputation.
  • Shape the future of an employee-owned company where leadership decisions have a visible impact.
  • Build and mentor the next generation of structural engineering leaders.
  • Enjoy the responsiveness and flexibility of a mid-sized firm without getting lost in bureaucracy.
  • Lead infrastructure, institutional, commercial, industrial, and development projects that matter to Atlantic Canadian communities.
  • Position yourself for continued advancement as GEMTEC grows nationally.

What We Offer

  • Compensation: Competitive salary, based on experience, leadership background, business development success, and internal equity.
  • Ownership culture:A meaningful leadership seat in an employee-owned consulting firm where success is shared by the people who help create it.
  • Benefits: Complete health and dental coverage, including vision, paramedical services, Teladoc, and an Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Retirement & time off: Retirement planning with a 5% employer match, paid vacation and sick days, and paid office closure between Christmas and New Year.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; structural specialization preferred. A Master's in Structural Engineering is an asset.
  • Eng. designation in at least one Atlantic province.
  • 10+ years of progressive structural engineering experience, including leadership or senior project management experience.
  • A strong consulting background with experience managing project delivery, budgets, proposals, client relationships, and business development.
  • Broad structural design experience across commercial, institutional, industrial, infrastructure, and development sectors.
  • Strong understanding of QA/QC systems, NBCC, CSA, regulatory requirements, and provincial standards.
  • Valid driver's licence and access to a personal vehicle for work-related travel.
