What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What is the difference between Engineering Manager vs Software Development Manager?

AspectEngineering ManagerSoftware Development Manager

Work EnvironmentEngineering departments, cross-disciplinary teams, technical environmentsSoftware development teams, Agile/Scrum environments, coding-focused settings
Industry UsageCommon in tech, manufacturing, and engineering firmsPrimarily in tech companies, software firms, and IT services

While both roles involve managing technical teams, Engineering Managers typically oversee broader engineering projects and cross-disciplinary teams, whereas Software Development Managers focus specifically on software projects and coding teams. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Are engineering managers paid well?

Engineering managers typically earn high salaries due to their leadership responsibilities, technical expertise, and experience level. Compensation varies by industry, location, and company size but generally includes base pay, bonuses, and stock options, reflecting the seniority of the role.

Job description

  About The Role

Antora is seeking an exceptionally driven Electrical Engineering Manager / Architect to lead the team designing the next generation of Antora's thermal energy storage products. This role combines people leadership with deep technical ownership of high-voltage, high-power electrical system architecture spanning both product and plant-level systems.
You will guide a team of engineers through the full product lifecycle, from architecture definition and trade studies through detailed design, prototyping, validation, manufacturing, and field deployment. Your work will directly shape the commercialization of a first-of-a-kind long-duration energy storage technology.
This is a highly cross-functional, hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in first-principles engineering, moves comfortably between whiteboard strategy and hardware reality, and knows how to build teams, systems, and processes that scale. You'll also help the organization apply modern engineering tools, including simulation, automation, and AI-enabled workflows where useful - to move faster, make better decisions, and keep the bar high for technical rigor.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and grow the team: Hire, mentor, and manage a high-performing electrical engineering team, providing technical direction, design reviews, and coaching to support strong execution and long-term team development.
  • Own system architecture: Define and drive the electrical architecture for both Antora's thermal battery modules and plant-level electrical systems.
  • Drive hardware development: Lead development of high-power, high-current electrical heating and power systems from early concept through detailed design, validation, site deployment, and operational support.
  • Advance R&D and innovation: Evaluate power delivery approaches, including AC and DC system architectures, to optimize for performance, efficiency, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Partner cross-functionally: Work closely with mechanical, reliability, software, procurement, manufacturing, and project execution teams to ensure cohesive system development and successful program delivery.
  • Ensure compliance and quality: Oversee electrical code compliance and standards alignment, including UL and NEC requirements, while maintaining a high bar for safety, reliability, and regulatory readiness.
  • Build engineering systems: Establish and reinforce strong engineering practices, documentation standards, simulation and review workflows, and effective development processes that improve team efficiency and design quality.
  • Shape how we work: Help the team thoughtfully incorporate modern tools, including AI-assisted analysis, documentation, and engineering workflows, in ways that accelerate execution without compromising judgment or rigor.
 What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, including a strong track record leading electrical engineering teams responsible for grid-scale or industrial power systems
  • Deep first-principles engineering mindset, with a relentless drive to increase performance and reduce cost
  • Extensive experience with high-power systems at the MW scale across low- to medium-voltage ranges, from 208V through 34.5kV+
  • Strong system architecture experience, including substation design, transformer sizing, bus and breaker sizing, and preparation of single-line diagrams
  • Significant experience with power electronics and switching-based power delivery systems at 100kW+
  • Proven ability to manage equipment vendors and EPC partners, with practical familiarity in field construction, commissioning, and site integration
  • Familiarity with electrical design and simulation tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, PSpice, PSCAD, or similar tools
  • Experience testing, qualifying, troubleshooting, and performing root-cause analysis for high-power electrical systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts across disciplines and levels of the organization
 Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience with renewable energy systems such as solar or wind, or with industrial process heating applications such as green hydrogen
  • Experience drafting and reviewing HAZOP, PHA, and LOTO procedures
  • Participation in full lifecycle product development, from early R&D through commercial launch and field operations
  • Experience using data, automation, or AI-enabled tools to improve engineering throughput, technical decision-making, or design quality in hardware development environments
