What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

Aeroflow Health - Director, Digital Commerce Engineering (Customer Experience Platforms)

Location: Asheville, North Carolina — Hybrid Preferred
Remote: Remote candidates may be considered within approved hiring locations

Build the Future of Digital Healthcare

Technology should make healthcare easier—not more complicated.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of patients rely on Aeroflow Health to access life-changing medical products and clinical services. Behind every prescription fulfilled, every order placed, and every patient served is technology that must be secure, scalable, intuitive, and remarkably reliable.

As Director, Digital Commerce Engineering, you'll lead the engineering organization responsible for those experiences. You'll develop exceptional Engineering Managers, strengthen the platforms that power our digital ecosystem, and help build technology that removes friction from healthcare for patients across the country.

If you're passionate about growing leaders, building high-performing engineering organizations, and delivering technology that makes a measurable difference in people's lives, we'd love to meet you.

The Opportunity

At Aeroflow, engineering isn't a support function—it's a strategic driver of our growth.

Our Digital Product Engineering organization builds the customer-facing platforms that power experiences across Mom & Baby, Sleep, Urology, and our digital commerce ecosystem. As we continue to grow, we're investing in the leaders, systems, and engineering practices that will define our next chapter.

As Director, Digital Commerce Engineering, you'll lead Engineering Managers responsible for building secure, scalable, and resilient digital products while helping elevate the engineering culture, technical direction, and operational excellence of the organization.

This role is designed for a leader who enjoys balancing strategy with execution—someone who can develop people, simplify complexity, improve engineering systems, and create alignment across technical and business teams.

Working alongside leaders across Technology, Product, UX, Security, Data, and Operations, you'll help shape how engineering delivers value throughout the business while ensuring every investment ultimately improves the customer experience.

Your Primary Responsibilities

Your success won't be measured by the code you write.

It will be measured by:

  • the Engineering Managers you develop,
  • the teams you build,
  • the platforms your organization delivers,
  • and the patient experiences those products make possible.

Build Exceptional Engineering Teams

  • Develop and coach Engineering Managers while fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Build, retain, and grow high-performing engineering teams through thoughtful hiring, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Create an environment where talented engineers are challenged, supported, and empowered to do their best work.
  • Establish organizational clarity by defining priorities, ownership, and decision-making across multiple engineering teams.
  • Remove obstacles, improve execution, and help teams deliver consistently with confidence and quality.

Shape the Future of Our Platform

  • Define and execute the long-term engineering strategy for Aeroflow's Digital Commerce Platform, creating a unified technical vision across Mom & Baby, Sleep, Urology, and future business lines.
  • Design reusable platform capabilities, including customer identity, customer context, experimentation, personalization, and shared commerce services, that become strategic assets across the organization.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify architecture, improve scalability, and strengthen platform consistency.
  • Guide modernization efforts that improve long-term platform health while creating optimal patient experiences.
  • Balance strategic investments with near-term delivery commitments and business priorities.

Raise the Engineering Bar

  • Drive architectural consistency across customer-facing products through shared engineering standards, reusable services, API-first design, and cloud-native principles.
  • Champion engineering capabilities that enable continuous digital optimization, including experimentation, feature management, customer analytics, personalization, and AI-powered customer experiences.
  • Establish meaningful engineering metrics that improve predictability, operational performance, and customer outcomes.
  • Encourage responsible adoption of emerging technologies, including AI-assisted software development.
  • Empower teams to make sound technical decisions while providing guidance on architecture, scalability, and engineering standards.

Create Alignment Across the Business

  • Build trusted partnerships across Product, UX, Architecture, Security, Data, Operations, Compliance, Marketing, and executive leadership.
  • Align engineering investments with customer needs and business priorities.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations with clarity and confidence.
  • Strengthen planning, prioritization, and execution across complex cross-functional initiatives.
  • Ensure engineering remains deeply connected to the outcomes that matter most.

Drive Operational Excellence

  • Continuously improve engineering processes that increase quality, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Scale delivery practices that enable teams to move faster without sacrificing quality.
  • Champion security, privacy, and compliance throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement through operational metrics, retrospectives, customer feedback, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Employee has an individual responsibility for knowledge of and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Compliance is a condition of employment and is considered an element of job performance
  • Maintain HIPAA/patient confidentiality
  • Regular and reliable attendance as assigned by your schedule
  • Other job duties assigned

You'll Thrive Here If You...

  • Develop leaders with the same passion you develop technology.
  • Create clarity where others see complexity.
  • Earn trust through humility, curiosity, and follow-through.
  • Balance long-term thinking with disciplined execution.
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, executives, and business partners alike.
  • Build alignment without relying on authority.
  • Care deeply about customer outcomes, engineering excellence, and team health.
  • Leave every team stronger than you found it.

What We Look For

The best candidates for this role don't simply manage engineering teams—they create environments where exceptional engineers and engineering leaders can thrive.

You'll be successful here if you:

  • Lead with humility, clarity, and accountability.
  • Invest in people after processes.
  • Build trust after driving change.
  • Challenge ideas while strengthening relationships.
  • Stay curious, adaptable, and customer-focused.
  • Lead with ownership and integrity.
  • Raise the standard for both technical excellence and leadership.
  • Make the people around you better.

Why This Role Matters

Every improvement your teams make—whether increasing platform reliability, simplifying the customer experience, accelerating software delivery, or developing future engineering leaders—helps more patients access the healthcare products and services they depend on.

You'll join a company that's investing heavily in technology, committed to developing exceptional leaders, and building an engineering organization where talented people can do the best work of their careers.

If you're excited about building exceptional engineering organizations while helping transform digital healthcare, we'd love to hear from you.
