What is an engineering manager?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering manager?

To thrive as an Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, typically with a degree in engineering and prior technical experience. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

How does an engineering manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job TitleManufacturing Engineering Manager
Location(s)Covaris - Woburn - MA

Job Description

Summary:

The Manufacturing Engineering Manager leads and develops Covaris' manufacturing engineering team, with responsibility for planning, prioritizing, and delegating engineering resources across instrument and consumables manufacturing. This is a people- and program-leadership role focused on building team capability, managing departmental priorities and budget, and ensuring the engineering organization delivers reliable, compliant, and cost-effective manufacturing for products used in biological sample preparation.

The successful candidate is a seasoned leader with 10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, including 5+ years directly managing engineering teams. Rather than functioning as a working / individual contributor, this leader sets direction, allocates resources, removes obstacles, and draws on deep engineering experience to mentor and develop the team.

Essential Responsibilities: The employee may be required to perform all or a combination of the following essential responsibilities as determined by business necessity.

  • Lead, manage, and develop the manufacturing engineering team, setting goals, managing workload and priorities, and delegating projects and resources to meet business objectives.
  • Provide career development, coaching, and technical mentorship to engineers and technicians; conduct performance reviews and build a high-performing, collaborative team.
  • Partner with Operations, R&D, Quality, and Supply Chain leadership to align manufacturing engineering priorities with production, new product introduction (NPI), and continuous-improvement goals.
  • Establish and track department KPIs (e.g., project delivery, yield, cost reduction) and report status, risks, and resource constraints to senior leadership.
  • Oversee, rather than individually execute, equipment, automation, validation, and process-improvement projects, ensuring they are properly scoped, resourced, and delivered on time.
  • Ensure manufacturing engineering activities and documentation comply with Quality System Regulations (QSRs) and ISO 13485 standards.
  • Champion lean manufacturing and a continuous-improvement culture across the engineering organization.
  • Resolve cross-functional and resource conflicts, remove obstacles for the team, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Support strategic capacity and operations planning, including automation roadmap, footprint, and scale-up for growing product demand.

Non-Essential Responsibilities: In addition to the essential responsibilities listed above, the employee may be required to perform other non-essential functions. Employees are required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by their supervisor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or related); advanced degree or MBA a plus
  • 10+ years of manufacturing engineering experience, including 5+ years of direct people-management experience leading engineering teams
  • Demonstrated ability to manage team workload, delegate resources, and develop and mentor engineers
  • Experience managing departmental budgets, capital planning, and staffing
  • Strong working knowledge of core manufacturing engineering disciplines: equipment and automation, process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), DOE, PFMEA, and lean manufacturing
  • Knowledge of QSR and ISO regulations (ISO 13485 a plus); medical device or life science manufacturing experience is helpful
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder-management skills across all levels of the organization
  • Proven ability to drive results and develop teams in a fast moving, growth-oriented environment

The annualcompensation range for this full-time position is $140,000 to $160,000. The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors including internal equity, work location, as well as individual qualifications, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Reasonable Accommodation: Covaris is committed to the spirit and the letter of the Americans with Disabilities Act. All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate otherwise qualified individuals.

PerkinElmer is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability status, age, or veteran status or any other characteristics protected by applicable law.
