Job description

Barton Malow Company is currently seeking an Electrical Design Manager in our Preconstruction department based in Southfield, Michigan.
Position Overview
Barton Malow Company is seeking a highly qualified Electrical Design Manager to fill a role in design management with a focus on electrical engineering for the construction of new or renovation of existing large industrial facilities.
The ideal candidate must possess academic, professional, and technical criteria, with a strong emphasis on leadership, communication, and hands-on experience in a variety of facilities.
The candidate must demonstrate a strong balance of technical expertise, project experience, leadership, and communication skills.
KEY PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Electrical Knowledge
  • This position is for a senior level electrical engineer with a minimum of 5 years of electrical engineering design experience with a focus on medium voltage and low voltage electrical power systems design, lighting systems design, and low voltage systems design. Engineers with less than 5 years' experience are encouraged to apply if there is a strong desire to grow into this senior position.
  • Familiarity with national electrical engineering firms and electrical contractors is a plus. Must possess the ability to prepare engineering and electrical execution bid packages and have the ability to negotiate scopes of services and contracts.
  • The candidate must possess analytical skills with ability to perform electrical load and lighting calculations, and the ability to analyze short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies.
  • Familiarity with power distribution equipment including medium voltage and low voltage switchgears, substations, switchboards, transformers is required. Candidate should be familiar with equipment manufacturers (both domestic and international). Knowledge and familiarity with equipment testing and commissioning methods and results is preferred.
  • Knowledge of utility high voltage substations and utility switch yards design is a significant advantage.

Engineering Design
  • The design capabilities are anticipated to cover diverse facilities such as:
    • Industrial and large commercial facilities, hospitals, stadiums, and high rise buildings.
    • Have an engineering knowledge on the workflows of engineering and BIM coordination.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with Navisworks and Revit is a plus but not required.

Design Management
  • Set Expectations + Establish Project Rules of Engagement: Manage the design/engineering on behalf of the Barton Malow team; Establish protocols for communication between the A/E, Barton Malow, Owner, and other Stakeholders; Define workflows, responsibilities, and reporting relationships across team member functions.
  • Establish + Monitor Scope: Establish and maintain the design scope of work and design division of responsibility with input and agreement from the A/E, Owner, and Barton Malow; Assist in identifying scope gaps and scope creep throughout the design phase; Assist with design change management.
  • Establish + Monitor Design Schedule: Establish and maintain the design deliverable list and overall design schedule in conjunction with the A/E; Ensure that design deliverables meet the needs of estimating, procurement, construction, and commissioning; Assist in tracking and removing design constraints to maintain the design schedule.
  • Report: Review, monitor, and report on overall A/E performance, quality, and contract compliance;Provide feedback and reports, as required by the project, to the Project Manager and Senior Design Manager.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • An accredited Electrical Engineering (EE) degree from a recognized U.S. institution.
  • Experience with industrial and automotive plants is a significant advantage.

Experience with the following areas will be considered an advantage to the applicant.
  • Estimating: Ability to perform conceptual and detailed project estimates. Familiarity with the estimating process and development of estimates for projects will be considered positive.
  • Construction Support: Candidates with knowledge and experience supporting the field team during the execution of the project will be a plus. Experience to prepare and/or manage procurement packages, process and equipment testing. and commissioning procedures.
  • Leadership: The Candidate must possess the ability to manage and lead a team of electrical engineers and estimators to perform their project duties.
  • Management: Strong communication and coordination skills to plan and lead project meetings with Owners, Engineering firms, Contractors, Vendors, and Manufacturers.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
