What do you do as an engineering internship?

An engineering internship involves assisting engineers with projects, conducting research, and gaining practical experience in areas such as design, testing, and analysis. Interns often work under supervision, use tools like CAD software, and develop technical skills relevant to their engineering discipline. The internship provides exposure to real-world engineering environments and may require a basic understanding of engineering principles and problem-solving abilities.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an engineering internship, and how much responsibility will I have?

As an engineering intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from assisting with ongoing research and development to supporting design, testing, or manufacturing processes. The level of responsibility often increases as you demonstrate competency, typically starting with supervised tasks and gradually moving toward more independent work. You'll likely collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other interns, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and practices. This exposure not only helps you apply classroom knowledge but also develops essential teamwork and communication skills highly valued in engineering roles.

What is the difference between Engineering Internship vs Engineering Co-op?

AspectEngineering InternshipEngineering Co-op
CredentialsTypically students or recent graduates; no required certificationsUsually students enrolled in engineering programs; no certifications required
Work EnvironmentShort-term, project-based, often during summerLonger-term, integrated with academic schedule, often semester-based
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in engineering firms, manufacturing, tech companiesCommon in engineering firms, manufacturing, and corporate R&D

Engineering internships and co-ops both provide practical experience in engineering fields. Internships are typically shorter, often during summer, and suited for students exploring careers. Co-ops are longer, integrated with academic programs, offering more in-depth exposure. Both roles help build skills and industry connections, but co-ops usually involve more extended work periods and deeper engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Intern, you typically need a strong academic background in engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, or programming languages like Python is often required. Strong teamwork, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns integrate into project teams and absorb new concepts quickly. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering valuable contributions, adapting to workplace demands, and building a solid foundation for a future engineering career.

Which engineering internship is best for engineering students?

The best engineering internship for students depends on their field of interest, such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering. Internships at reputable companies or organizations that offer hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to industry tools like CAD or MATLAB are highly valuable. Selecting internships aligned with career goals and gaining relevant skills can enhance future employment prospects.

We are seeking a Design-Build Estimator to join our team in Flora, Mississippi, focusing primarily on industrial building projects.

Job Summary

The Design-Build Estimator supports the development of complex industrial projects from initial concept through construction. This role goes beyond performing quantity takeoffs from completed drawings and works closely with senior estimators, owners, designers, trade partners, vendors, and project teams to define project requirements, evaluate solutions, develop budgets, and prepare process fro successful execution.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, researching unfamiliar scopes of work, working collaboratively, and learning how all pieces of a construction project come together. The role provides hands-on exposure to the full design-build process and the opportunity to grow in to independently managing estimates and greater reconstruction responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Design Coordination and Document Control

  • Participate in design coordination to gather and develop preliminary project information from owners, designers, vendors, and trade partners.
  • Develop schematic sketches and exhibits as needed to communicate project requirements and coordinate solutions.
  • Review developing documents for missing information, scope gaps, and items requiring clarification.
  • Maintain current drawings, specifications, addenda, and organized estimating files throughout the preconstruction process.

Quantity Takeoff and Cost Development

  • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs using Bluebeam and other estimating tools.
  • Research unfamiliar scopes, materials, equipment, construction methods, and pricing as needed.
  • Evaluate value-engineering opportunities, alternates, and other solutions that may improve project cost, constructability, or overall value.

Subcontractor and Vendor Solicitation

  • Prepare bid packages and distribute appropriate project information to subcontractors and vendors.
  • Review and compare proposals to confirm scope coverage and identify gaps or overlaps.
  • Communicate with trade partners throughout the estimating process and develop strong working relationships.

Estimate and Proposal Preparation

  • Work with the lead or senior estimator to establish estimate structure, assumptions, and approach.
  • Build estimates incorporating materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors, vendors, and other project costs.
  • Draft proposals and estimate packages for senior estimator review.

Project Handoff and Operations Support

  • Assist with transitioning awarded projects from estimating into construction.
  • Prepare initial project setup information and supporting documentation for the operations team.
  • Communicate key estimate assumptions, scope information, pricing considerations, and project risks during handoff.

Preferred Background

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Construction, or related field.
  • Recent graduates and candidates with two to four years of construction or estimating experience are encouraged to apply. For recent graduates, internships or other relevant construction experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, estimating software, or similar programs.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Enjoys working collaboratively in a strong, high-performing team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, documentation, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Curiosity and willingness to research unfamiliar scopes, materials, systems, and solutions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and the ability to learn estimating and quantity takeoff software.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with owners, designers, subcontractors, vendors, and internal project teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and meetings as needed.

What You'll Get

Malouf Construction offers competitive compensation and a strong benefits package designed to support our employees and their families, including:

•Employer-paid medical and life insurance

•Dental and vision plan options

•401(k) with employer match

•Paid holidays

•Paid vacation and sick time
