Hussmann's Internship Program provides meaningful, real-life experiences while working as a solutions leader in the food retailing industry. Hussmann interns receive competitive compensation, participate in community stewardship, network with company leadership, and learn about career opportunities available at Hussmann.
As an Engineering intern in the 2027 Hussmann Summer Internship Program, the intern will work alongside experienced engineers on commercial refrigeration product development and sustaining engineering on continuous improvement projects. This role provides hands-on experience applying classroom knowledge to real engineering challenges in a collaborative product-development and manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
  • Support engineering projects involving the design, development, testing, and improvement of commercial refrigeration systems and components.
  • Assist with engineering calculations, data collection, analysis, and preparation of technical reports and presentations.
  • Create or update engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, wiring diagrams, test procedures, and other controlled documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, prototype builds, laboratory testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigations under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Product Management, Controls, and other cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues and improve product performance, quality, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Research components, materials, technologies, and industry practices; summarize findings and provide recommendations.
  • Support continuous improvement, value engineering, and process-standardization activities.
  • Network with senior leaders, associates, and other program interns to learn about our organization.
  • Tour Hussmann's 1.6 million square foot manufacturing facility, our Global Hub for hosting customers, and the R&D Lab where we test product quality.
  • Participate in community stewardship outreach, career development events, and other team-building offsite events.
  • Compete in our annual Ideation & Innovation Challenge.

Ideation & Innovation Challenge: Throughout the twelve-week program, all Hussmann interns will divide into cross-functional teams and compete with one another for the Hussmann Ideation & Innovation Challenge. Working with Hussmann mentors and leaders, you and your team will identify a solution to a provided problem statement. At the end of the summer, you'll present your team's business proposal to a panel of judges, executive leaders, and the organization - and possibly create a roadmap for Hussmann's next great innovation.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in school pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and demonstrate strong attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and eager to learn
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to relocate if not local

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Junior or senior standing at the start of the internship.
  • Coursework or project experience in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, instrumentation, or related subjects.
  • Experience with 3D CAD, Auto CAD or schematic tools, data-analysis software, programming, or engineering simulation tools.
  • Hands-on experience through laboratories, student design teams, research, prior internships, or personal engineering projects.
  • Interest in commercial refrigeration, HVAC, controls, product development, testing, or manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, schematics, test equipment, statistical analysis, or structured problem-solving methods.

The summer internship will run from the third week of May through the first week of August. These dates may be changed to meet the needs of the student.
