Transportation Engineering Intern
Westwood Professional Services
The Transportation Intern will join a roadway design team supporting highway, roadway, and multimodal infrastructure projects for DOTs, counties, cities, and other public agencies. Projects range from small local road rehabilitation projects to large-scale highway corridor and interchange designs supporting regional mobility. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply civil engineering coursework to real-world transportation infrastructure projects.
As a Transportation Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards while assisting Senior Engineers in the preparation of roadway plans, profiles, and construction documents. The intern will build foundational proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and other design software used by the transportation design team.
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the preparation of roadway plan and profile sheets, cross sections, and typical sections for highway and roadway projects.
  • Design, prepare, check working drawings, layouts, and estimates using a verity of engineering software.
  • Support quantity calculations, cost estimates, and construction document preparation for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Help review geometric design elements against state DOT design criteria.
  • Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to gather field data and interface directly with clients and public agency staff.

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate Civil Engineering program or related field of study.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:
  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in transportation or roadway design.
