Position Overview
This position is responsible for the structural analysis and design of routine to extremely complex bridge standards projects, including projects related to the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, All Bridge Design Memoranda, and associated details and base sheets. This position is also responsible for conducting special investigations concerning design specifications, design concepts, and construction procedures for the department.
Essential Functions
  • Develops routine to extremely complex structural standards which incorporate current methods and technology.
  • Produces design computations utilized in the preparation of structural plans.
  • Aids in the updating of design policy documents including the Bridge Manual, Culvert Manual, Design Guides, and All Bridge Design Memoranda.
  • Reviews and recommends approval/disapproval of proprietary products for qualified product lists in Illinois.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil, structural, or bridge engineering.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of civil engineering with an emphasis on bridge design and construction.

Conditions of Employment
  • Requires a valid driver's license.
  • Requires occasional statewide and out-of-state travel with overnight stays.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
