What is the difference between Engineering Design Checker vs Engineering Drafter?

AspectEngineering Design CheckerEngineering Drafter
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree or certificationUsually requires drafting or CAD certification
Work EnvironmentReviewing and verifying engineering designsCreating technical drawings and plans
Industry UsageUsed in engineering firms, construction, manufacturingCommon in architecture, engineering, manufacturing
Primary FocusEnsuring design accuracy and complianceProducing detailed drawings based on specifications

The main difference is that Engineering Design Checkers focus on reviewing and verifying engineering designs for accuracy and compliance, often requiring an engineering background. In contrast, Engineering Drafters primarily produce technical drawings and plans based on engineers' specifications. Both roles are essential in the engineering process but serve different functions within the design and review workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Design Checker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Design Checker, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, technical drawing standards, and quality control processes, often supported by an engineering degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and industry-specific standards like ASME or ISO is typically required. Detail orientation, critical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying errors and collaborating with design teams. These skills ensure design accuracy, regulatory compliance, and the overall integrity of engineering projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Engineering Design Checkers during the review process?

Engineering Design Checkers often encounter challenges such as identifying discrepancies between design intent and technical drawings, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and catching errors under tight deadlines. The role requires a strong attention to detail and effective communication skills to coordinate with engineers and designers for clarifications or corrections. Staying updated on evolving standards and balancing thoroughness with efficiency are also key aspects of the job. By proactively collaborating with the design team, Design Checkers help maintain quality and reduce costly revisions later in the project lifecycle.

What are Engineering Design Checkers?

Engineering Design Checkers are professionals responsible for reviewing and verifying technical drawings, blueprints, and design documents to ensure they meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and project specifications. They play a critical role in maintaining design accuracy, identifying errors or inconsistencies, and ensuring that designs are feasible and safe for production or construction. Their work helps prevent costly mistakes and ensures the final product meets quality and safety standards.

We have an exciting opportunity located in Poway, CA for a Design Checker to join the MQ-9B SeaGuardian team.
Under general supervision and following established procedures, this position is responsible for checking complex design and documentation packages associated with Initial Releases (IR) and Change Notices (CN) for compliance with Drawing Standards specified in ASME Y14.100-2017, including ASME Y14.5-2018, and in-house procedures, e.g., Drafting Room Manual (DRM), Standard Drawing Notes, and customer contract specifications.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Check documentation of fabricated items, schematics, assemblies, Source Control Drawings (SCD's), and Vendor Item Control Drawings (VICDs) to ensure conformance to design documentation supplied by engineering and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
  • Verify fit, form, and function for completeness and consistency of dimensioning on drawings.
  • Perform tolerance stack up analysis in support of drawing features dimensioned.
  • Recommend changes to the Drafting Room Manual and Standard Drawing Notes.
  • Collaborate with other checkers to ensure consistency and completeness of checking practices.
  • Confers with engineering to resolve drawing and design issues.
  • May confer with other disciplines, e.g., quality, manufacturing, and configuration management to resolve drawing, design, and PDM related issues.

Equivalent additional work experience as an Electrical/Mechanical drawing checker may be substituted in lieu of education.
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of ASME Y14.100-2017 and ASME Y14.5-2018 (GD&T), and experience with a PDM.
  • Ability to be an integral member in a team environment that interacts with other disciplines.
