What is an engineer?

Engineers design, build, and maintain the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their specific engineering industry. Their specific job description relates to all of the detailed tasks, responsibilities, skills, and education requirements that a company or organization requires for their engineering specialty. For example, electrical engineers develop, monitor, and test electrical systems. Civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, and airports. Many engineers begin their career with an internship or apprenticeship while they are still in school, and then acquire an entry-level position. As they learn more about the industry, engineers are given their own projects and more responsibility.

What kind of jobs do engineers do?

Engineers design, develop, and test systems, structures, or products across various fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, software, and chemical engineering. They often work in offices, labs, or construction sites, using technical skills, problem-solving, and tools like CAD software or testing equipment. Many engineering roles require relevant certifications and a strong understanding of mathematics and science.

How do engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineers often work closely with professionals from various departments such as product management, design, and quality assurance to ensure project requirements are met. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on goals, discuss technical constraints, and review progress. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as engineers may need to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This cross-functional approach helps ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and meet all necessary standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer?

To thrive as an Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, problem-solving, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as CAD tools, simulation platforms, and, in some fields, certifications like FE or PE is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set exceptional engineers apart. These abilities ensure effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and smooth collaboration in technical environments.

What does an engineer do?

An engineer applies principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions for technical problems. They design, build, and test products, systems, or structures while considering efficiency, safety, and cost. Engineers can work in a variety of fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, each with its own specialized focus. Their work often involves teamwork, problem-solving, and the use of advanced technology.

What is the difference between Engineer vs Technician?

AspectEngineerTechnician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldTechnical diploma or associate degree
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, analysis, project managementInstallation, maintenance, troubleshooting
Industry UsageDesign firms, manufacturing, constructionField service, manufacturing plants, maintenance teams
Common Search/ComparisonEngineer vs Technician

Engineers typically hold a bachelor's degree and focus on designing, analyzing, and managing projects. Technicians usually have technical diplomas and handle hands-on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. While engineers plan and oversee, technicians implement and support. Both roles are essential in engineering projects, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work environment.

Job description

Edge Processing Solutions Engineer We build Go-based software systems that run at the tactical edge that are disconnected, resource‐constrained, and often airborne or forward‐deployed. Our portfolio spans ISR data pipelines, autonomous platform integration, and the underlying Kubernetes runtime that makes any of it deployable in the real world. What You'll Do: Lead architecture and delivery for an edge software product line from prototype through fielded capability. Build and maintain Go services that operate in disconnected and intermittently connected environments. Design Kubernetes‐native systems, including workload architecture, Helm chart authoring, custom controllers or operators where warranted, and clean separation between platform and application concerns. Own the Kubernetes runtime story, including K3S on edge hardware, image distribution into air‐gapped enclaves, GPU scheduling, and read‐only root filesystems. Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI or GitHub Actions, that produce signed, scanned, and reproducible artifacts. Integrate with tactical data standards such as Cursor on Target or TAK, and ISR sensor pipelines. Mentor engineers, set technical standards, and run code review with a high bar. Interface directly with the customer to translate operator needs into technical requirements and back again. Support proposal and capture work for follow‐on scope. You Have: 6+ years of experience with software engineering in a professional environment. 2+ years of experience in a technical lead or engineering lead role. Experience using Go as a primary systems language for production. Experience deploying and operating Kubernetes in production. Experience with disconnected or air‐gapped software delivery, including image syncing, registry mirroring, offline package management, and updating strategies for systems that cannot phone home. Experience with Linux at the systems level, including systems, networking, filesystems such as overlays or tempfs, and containers under the hood. Ability to mentor engineers and raise the technical bar of a team. Secret clearance. Bachelor's degree in CS or Computer Engineering. Nice If You Have: Experience with the CoT or TAK ecosystem, including TAK Server, ATAK or WINTAK, and CoT message handling. Experience in ISR, UAS, or autonomous platform software such as PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, or sensor integration. Experience with NVIDIA Jetson or edge GPU scheduling, including device plugins, MIG, and CUDA on Kubernetes. Experience writing or contributing to whitepapers, capability briefs, or technical proposal volumes. Experience using Rust or modern C++ for production. Experience using K3S, MicroK8s, or any flavor running on constrained hardware. TS/SCI clearance. Clearance Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required. Compensation At Booz Allen, we celebrate your contributions, provide you with opportunities and choices, and support your total well‐being. Our offerings include health, life, disability, financial, and retirement benefits, as well as paid leave, professional development, tuition assistance, work‐life programs, and dependent care. Salary range for this position is $112,800.00 to $257,000.00 annually (USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen's total compensation package for employees.
