What is an engineer?

Engineers design, build, and maintain the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their specific engineering industry. Their specific job description relates to all of the detailed tasks, responsibilities, skills, and education requirements that a company or organization requires for their engineering specialty. For example, electrical engineers develop, monitor, and test electrical systems. Civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, and airports. Many engineers begin their career with an internship or apprenticeship while they are still in school, and then acquire an entry-level position. As they learn more about the industry, engineers are given their own projects and more responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer?

To thrive as an Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, problem-solving, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as CAD tools, simulation platforms, and, in some fields, certifications like FE or PE is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set exceptional engineers apart. These abilities ensure effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and smooth collaboration in technical environments.

What does an engineer do?

An engineer applies principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions for technical problems. They design, build, and test products, systems, or structures while considering efficiency, safety, and cost. Engineers can work in a variety of fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, each with its own specialized focus. Their work often involves teamwork, problem-solving, and the use of advanced technology.

How do engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineers often work closely with professionals from various departments such as product management, design, and quality assurance to ensure project requirements are met. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on goals, discuss technical constraints, and review progress. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as engineers may need to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This cross-functional approach helps ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and meet all necessary standards.

What is the difference between Engineer vs Technician?

Job description

At JetCool, a Flex company, we're at the forefront of liquid cooling innovation, delivering advanced solutions that empower our partners in AI and high-performance computing. United by a shared purpose, our teams are pushing the limits of what's possible and tackling complex challenges.
A career at JetCool offers the opportunity to make a real impact by helping build smarter, more sustainable data centers. Together, we're not just advancing technology - we're redefining cooling standards to create a more sustainable tomorrow.
Job Summary
To support our extraordinary teams who build great products and contribute to our growth, JetCool is looking to add a Sales Engineer located in Littleton, MA or Austin, TX.
Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships, this role supports our OEM group, with a primary focus on supporting and expanding our partnership with Dell and other global system manufacturers. This role blends deep technical fluency with customer-facing leadership, helping OEM partners understand how JetCool's liquid-to-liquid and liquid-to-air cooling architectures integrate into their server platforms and align with end-customer requirements.
You will serve as the technical bridge between JetCool's engineering teams and OEM customers, ensuring our SmartPlates, CDUs, and full-stack cooling solutions meet the thermal, mechanical, and integration needs of next-generation AI and high-density compute systems.
Success in this role requires translating the customers' technical requirements into actionable server and rack-level architectures, collaborating closely with OEM teams.
What a typical day looks like:
  • Lead technical discovery with Dell and other OEM customers to understand system-level thermal requirements for AI and HPC platforms
  • Map JetCool's liquid-to-liquid and liquid-to-air cooling architectures to OEM server designs, rack-level strategies, and customer deployment models
  • Serve as the primary technical interface for customer engagements, guiding customers through solution feasibility, integration, and performance expectations
  • Support sales cycles by contributing to quotes, configuration analysis, RFP/RFQ responses, technical documentation, and customer-facing content
  • Gather and interpret OEM requirements, specifications, and system documentation for JetCool Engineering
  • Collaborate with Engineering to define, refine, and communicate cooling solutions-including cold plates, manifolds, CDUs, and rack-level integration
  • Evaluate server and rack architectures (Dell PowerEdge, GPU platforms, AI accelerators, etc.) to ensure compatibility with JetCool solutions
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations that highlight JetCool's differentiation in thermal performance, efficiency, and sustainability
  • Present thermal analyses in a clear, consumable format for both engineering and business stakeholders
  • Adapt technical depth and messaging in real time based on audience, context, and customer priorities

The experience we're looking to add to our team:
  • 3+ years in pre-sales engineering, OEM engagement, or customer-facing technical roles
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex engineering analyses
  • Strong communication, presentation, and customer-facing skills
  • Experience with fluid-based mechanical designs or thermal systems is preferred
  • Exposure to CFD tools (ANSYS, Icepak, FloTHERM) is a plus
  • Experience applying heat-transfer and fluid-mechanics fundamentals to real-world cooling solutions is preferred
  • Familiarity with server architectures, AI accelerators, and OEM design cycles (Dell experience strongly preferred)

What you'll receive for the great work you provide:
  • Full range of medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Life Insurance
  • Short-term and Long-term Disability
  • Matching 401(k) Contributions
  • Vacation and Paid Sick Time
  • Tuition Reimbursement
