What is an engineer?

Engineers design, build, and maintain the functional aspects of a product, structure, or system for their specific engineering industry. Their specific job description relates to all of the detailed tasks, responsibilities, skills, and education requirements that a company or organization requires for their engineering specialty. For example, electrical engineers develop, monitor, and test electrical systems. Civil engineers design, construct, and maintain large infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, and airports. Many engineers begin their career with an internship or apprenticeship while they are still in school, and then acquire an entry-level position. As they learn more about the industry, engineers are given their own projects and more responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer?

To thrive as an Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, problem-solving, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as CAD tools, simulation platforms, and, in some fields, certifications like FE or PE is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set exceptional engineers apart. These abilities ensure effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and smooth collaboration in technical environments.

What does an engineer do?

An engineer applies principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions for technical problems. They design, build, and test products, systems, or structures while considering efficiency, safety, and cost. Engineers can work in a variety of fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, each with its own specialized focus. Their work often involves teamwork, problem-solving, and the use of advanced technology.

How do engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineers often work closely with professionals from various departments such as product management, design, and quality assurance to ensure project requirements are met. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on goals, discuss technical constraints, and review progress. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as engineers may need to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This cross-functional approach helps ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and meet all necessary standards.

What is the difference between Engineer vs Technician?

AspectEngineerTechnician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldTechnical diploma or associate degree
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, analysis, project managementInstallation, maintenance, troubleshooting
Industry UsageDesign firms, manufacturing, constructionField service, manufacturing plants, maintenance teams
Common Search/ComparisonEngineer vs Technician

Engineers typically hold a bachelor's degree and focus on designing, analyzing, and managing projects. Technicians usually have technical diplomas and handle hands-on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. While engineers plan and oversee, technicians implement and support. Both roles are essential in engineering projects, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work environment.

The position will oversee scope, schedule, budget, staffing, QA/QC, and client expectations, apply sound engineering judgment to project challenges and risks, and mentor and develop technical staff. The role will also support LPD's continued growth by strengthening client relationships, identifying and pursuing new opportunities, and contributing to RFQs, RFPs, interviews, proposals, scopes, technical approaches, teams, and fees.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Technical Delivery

  • Develop scopes of work, fee proposals, schedules, and project execution plans.
  • Lead civil site development projects from initial concept, feasibility, and due diligence through design, permitting, construction administration, and project closeout while managing project scope, schedule, budget, resources, and deliverables to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Perform site assessments, feasibility studies, and due diligence evaluations to identify project opportunities, constraints, risks, and solutions while developing and overseeing the preparation of civil engineering plans, technical reports, calculations, specifications, permitting documents, and construction-related deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership and engineering design and oversight for grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, erosion and sediment control, site access improvements, and related civil infrastructure.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control reviews of plans, calculations, specifications, reports, and construction documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with LPD standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes, design standards, permitting requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate resource planning, workload management, and project forecasting by assigning and delegating project tasks to engineers, designers, and CAD professionals based on project needs, staff capabilities, and team workload.
  • Closely monitor project financial performance, including billing accuracy, accounts receivable, and proactive management of financial risks.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project delivery, profitability, internal processes, team development, and client experience.
  • Stay current with industry standards, technologies, and best practices and apply new tools and approaches to improve design efficiency and project outcomes.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

  • Drive innovation by researching and implementing cutting-edge civil engineering technologies and methodologies.
  • Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning within project teams.
  • Assist in developing internal standards, processes, and best practices to improve project delivery.

Client Management & Business Development

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by developing and maintaining strong relationships through proactive communication, technical guidance, responsiveness, expectation management, and exceptional service to support successful project outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and new client relationships aligned with LPD's strategic goals.
  • Build and develop areas of practice based on professional interests, market opportunities, and firm objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a pipeline of prospective projects and clients within assigned market sectors, including tracking upcoming opportunities, identifying decision-makers, understanding client needs, and developing pursuit strategies.
