SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Working independently, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer or Assistant Chief Engineer and/or other management, the Watch Engineer will take an active role in supporting the day-to-day directives of the Chief Engineer and/or the Assistant Chief Engineer. All Engineering staff will take direction from the Watch Engineer(s) on duty in the absence of the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers.

SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum of 3 years of prior experience performing the duties of a Watch Engineer functions including: mechanical work, preventative maintenance, electrical, plumbing HVAC, steam and hot water distribution systems, central plant operations, BMS, etc.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with strong attention to detail.
• Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
• Excellent attention to detail with ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment a must.
• Ability to motivate staff and implement strategies to meet and exceed service level expectations
• Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative.
• Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
• Knowledge of New York City/State fire safety and building occupancy regulations.
• Maintain compliance with all city agencies and departmental licensing requirements necessary for building operation including acquiring and renewing their FDNY New York City Refrigeration Operators License, Certificates of Fitness, etc. Complying with management requests to acquire additional C of F’s as per changing city agency regulations.
• Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Monitoring of all building equipment and climate readings via the BMS on each shift.
• Collecting and saving weekly temperature and humidity reports generated by the BMS to the predesignated network drive for access by other departments.
• Maintaining and recording in the log book all equipment online, outside air conditions, contractors onsite, problematic issues discovered while on duty, emergency situations (i.e. leaks, floods, fire alarms, injuries, etc.) and the time of occurrence.
• Perform physical building rounds of all equipment, Mechanical Equipment Rooms (MERs) including Elevator Machine Rooms (EMRs), gallery spaces and any additional critical areas and reporting any issues, inconsistencies or emergencies promptly to the Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, and/or facilities management and to the incoming shift whether they can be repaired immediately or not.
• Conduct daily building rounds, temperature and humidity readings of all gallery spaces and predesignated areas. Readings are to be measured using a handheld device, recorded and given to the Chief Engineer.
• Log all meter readings and give to the Chief Engineer.
• Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and record keeping of all HVAC Plant, related equipment, and all equipment necessary for safe and proper operation of the building including inspection of pre-action sprinkler standpipe and fire pump systems.
• Perform upkeep of all MERs and loading dock including wiping down of equipment and surfaces, mopping floors, painting, moving trash containers outside for pick-up, etc.
• Escort and assist Contractors as assigned.
• Perform plumbing and restroom maintenance and repairs
• Snow removal as needed, on a voluntary basis.   
• Perform electrical work as it relates to preventative maintenance of equipment.
• Respond to requests, via Work Order Ticket System or directly from staff, related to building temperature in galleries, office spaces, theaters, server rooms, leaks, power outages, elevator malfunction, door operation/lock issues, restroom repairs, etc.
• Ensure proper and professional turnover to the incoming shift which includes notifying the next Watch Engineer(s) on duty of any equipment issues, alarms, contractors onsite, ongoing work or projects, incomplete tasks, turnover of keys, notes in the log book, etc.
• Be available, upon request, for special events, exhibition openings or performances. Events that will have 300 guests or more or at management’s discretion will require a dedicated Watch Engineer who will be responsible to handle issues regarding temperature, plumbing, electrical, monitoring equipment directly related to the event.
• Assist staff with the moving of furniture or other items and covering/uncovering, draining/filling of the fountain may be required.
• Locksmith work/key making, etc.

WORK DEMANDS and ENVIRONMENT:

• Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.

• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to inspect mechanical systems/make repairs.
• Work in close proximity to high voltages and live electrical equipment; to be aware of electrical hazards
• Work in close proximity to chemical hazards-cleaning solvents
• Ability to move mechanical parts/equipment/tools
• Occasionally work may be conducted outdoors, exposure to varied weather conditions.
• Climbing ladders and in some situations using fall restraint harnesses
• Ability to work shifts that rotate monthly, overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
• Ability to lift at least 50lbs.

EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited Trade, Technical School or union training program with focus on HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or other building trades is preferred but not required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• FDNY NYC Refrigeration Operators License preferred but not required. 

• All C of F’s necessary for present and future compliance with all NYC and NYS agencies regulations

SALARY RANGE:  $39.09 per hour
