What is an engineer Va?

An Engineer Va is typically a mid- to senior-level engineering position within organizations that use a tiered or graded engineering structure, such as government agencies or large corporations. The 'Va' designation often refers to a specific pay grade or job classification, indicating advanced technical expertise and experience. Engineers at this level are usually responsible for complex projects, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring compliance with technical standards. They may also be involved in project management, design, testing, and implementation of engineering solutions. The exact duties and requirements can vary depending on the organization and engineering discipline.

How do engineer Va professionals typically collaborate with cross-functional teams on complex projects?

Engineer Va professionals often work closely with teams from different disciplines, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure project success. Collaboration involves regular meetings, sharing technical documentation, and problem-solving sessions to address project challenges. Effective communication and a proactive approach are essential, as these engineers frequently coordinate technical requirements, timelines, and deliverables with stakeholders. This teamwork not only helps drive innovation but also provides opportunities to broaden technical knowledge and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineer Va, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer Va, you need a solid background in engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and a relevant bachelor's degree (often in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering). Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure, are commonly required. Excellent teamwork, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and lead complex projects. These competencies ensure you can design, analyze, and implement engineering solutions that meet project goals and safety standards.

Job Description:

What will you work on?
You will be responsible for leading cost optimization across Spin Master's global product portfolios, from initial concept through production, to maximize consumer value and ensure product profitability. In this role, you will generate preliminary cost estimates from sketches or early CAD models, apply design-for-manufacturing/assembly (DFMA) principles, and partner with large cross-functional teams to balance design integrity, technical feasibility, and business financial targets.
How will you create impact?

  • Provide accurate preliminary cost estimates for parts, assemblies, and finished goods across diverse toy product categories.

  • Collaborate with Product Design, Development, and Brand Marketing to provide technical guidance and cost assessments on new concepts.

  • Lead product cost optimization and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) meetings to identify cost reduction opportunities and improve margin performance.

  • Analyze and itemize product functions or assemblies to assist design and marketing teams with feature prioritization.

  • Train, guide, and mentor product development team members on cost estimation methodologies and cost reduction techniques.

  • Partner with Global Sourcing teams to evaluate vendor quotations, establish initial component costs, and drive overall reductions in tooling capital expenditures.

  • Maintain and evolve internal ballpark costing tools, metrics, and portfolio management software.

  • Conduct on-site evaluations at production vendors to support brand-wide cost-saving initiatives and optimize manufacturing processes.

  • Assess new materials, automation opportunities, and advanced manufacturing techniques for integration into future product lines.

What are your skills and experience?

  • Proven track record in cost engineering, cost estimating, product engineering, or a related development-support field.

  • Deep technical knowledge of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, automated assembly, wood, plastics, fabrics, electronics, and packaging components.

  • Strong competency in applying design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly (DFMA) principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret design sketches, preliminary CAD, and technical specifications to build robust bottom-up cost models.

  • Experience leading cross-functional cost-reduction initiatives and presenting project progress to executive leadership.

  • Prior experience in toys, games, soft goods, or consumer packaged goods (CPG) is preferred.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline is preferred.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally to support on-site vendor projects.
