How does an Engineer Systems Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

As an Engineer Systems Architect, you will frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure the system's architecture aligns with business goals and technical requirements. This collaboration often involves conducting design reviews, facilitating technical discussions, and integrating feedback from various disciplines. Effective communication and a holistic understanding of both technical and business perspectives are essential to successfully guide the project from conception through deployment.

What does an Engineer Systems Architect do?

An Engineer Systems Architect designs and oversees the overall structure of complex technical systems, ensuring that all parts integrate seamlessly and function effectively. They analyze business requirements, select appropriate technologies, and create high-level plans for system development and deployment. Their work involves coordinating with software engineers, hardware specialists, and other stakeholders to develop solutions that are scalable, secure, and reliable. Systems Architects also play a key role in troubleshooting, upgrading, and maintaining systems over time.

Who gets paid more, architect or engineer?

In the context of systems architecture, architects typically earn higher salaries than engineers due to their seniority, strategic responsibilities, and experience level. Architects often oversee design and planning, requiring advanced skills and certifications, which are reflected in higher compensation compared to engineers who focus on implementation and technical tasks.

What is an engineering systems architect?

An engineering systems architect is a professional responsible for designing and integrating complex technical systems, ensuring they meet functional and performance requirements. They often work with cross-disciplinary teams, utilize modeling tools, and have expertise in systems engineering principles to develop scalable and efficient solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineer Systems Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer Systems Architect, you need deep expertise in systems engineering, architecture design, and requirements analysis, usually backed by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools (such as SysML or UML), cloud platforms, and relevant certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect is highly valued. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These competencies are critical for designing scalable, robust systems that meet business goals and technical requirements.

What is the difference between Engineer Systems Architect vs Engineer Network Architect?

AspectEngineer Systems ArchitectEngineer Network Architect
CredentialsBachelor's in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related; certifications like TOGAF, CISSPBachelor's in Network Engineering, Computer Science; certifications like Cisco CCNP, CCIE
Work EnvironmentDesigns and integrates complex IT systems across organizationsDesigns and implements network infrastructure and security
Industry UsageUsed in enterprise IT, software development, and systems integrationCommon in telecommunications, data centers, and large enterprise networks

The Engineer Systems Architect focuses on designing comprehensive IT systems and solutions, while the Engineer Network Architect specializes in building and securing network infrastructure. Both roles require technical expertise and certifications, but their scope and focus differ significantly.

What is the salary of a systems architect?

The salary of a systems architect typically ranges from $100,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in cloud computing or cybersecurity can earn higher compensation. Certifications like TOGAF or AWS can also influence salary levels.

What is the highest salary of a System Architect?

The highest salaries for System Architects can exceed $150,000 annually, especially for those with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and expertise in cloud computing, enterprise architecture, or specialized tools. Top earners often work in large organizations or in high-demand industries such as technology, finance, or consulting.

Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Systems Architect to lead the development and integration of complex Systems of Systems (SoS) spanning space, air, and ground domains in support of the U.S. Space Force. This role operates within a classified (SAP) environment and requires deep mission engineering expertise, operational understanding of joint warfighting, and the ability to translate commander’s intent into executable architectural solutions.

The ideal candidate understands how to move from kill chains to kill webs, decompose operational vignettes into technical requirements, and architect resilient C2-enabled ecosystems that connect sensors, decision-makers, and effectors across domains.

Program Overview

Location: El Segundo, CA

Clearance: Must possess an active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance and eligible for SCI, which only a U.S. citizen can obtain

What You’ll Do

Mission Engineering & Architecture Development

  • Lead development of Mission Engineering frameworks supporting multi-domain operations (MDO).
  • Develop and analyze DODAF products (OV, SV, CV, DIV, StdV, etc.) to capture operational, system, and capability views.
  • Decompose operational vignettes and mission threads into actionable architectural artifacts and technical requirements.
  • Translate commander’s intent and CONOPS into system-level and SoS-level architecture designs.
  • Develop mission thread analyses to identify operational seams, latency risks, and interoperability gaps.

Systems of Systems (SoS) Integration

  • Architect integrated solutions linking space, air, and ground platforms across sensor-to-shooter ecosystems.
  • Transition traditional linear kill chains into resilient, distributed kill webs, identifying redundancies and cross-domain opportunities.
  • Define and evaluate C2 linkages across sensors, decision nodes, and effectors.
  • Identify architecture gaps, technical risks, and integration challenges across domains.
  • Conduct risk assessments related to interoperability, latency, resiliency, and cyber vulnerabilities.

Space & C2 Integration

  • Support integration efforts within United States Space Force mission areas.
  • Architect solutions aligned with Department of the Air Force Battle Network Integration priorities.
  • Support integration across Nexus teams, including DN1, MILSATCOM, and DAF Battle Network stakeholders.
  • Develop and assess Universal C2 standards, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), APIs, and space messaging architectures.
  • Ensure interoperability between MILSATCOM, tactical data links, and joint C2 ecosystems.

Classified Environment Execution

  • Operate effectively within SAP and highly compartmented environments.
  • Ensure strict adherence to OPSEC requirements.
  • Collaborate with government, FFRDC, and industry partners in secure facilities.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with SAP eligibility.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering or systems architecture within DoD programs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing DODAF architectural artifacts.
  • Experience with Systems of Systems (SoS) and mission thread analysis.
  • Operational understanding of joint warfighting and multi-domain operations.
  • Experience linking C2 systems to sensors and effectors across domains.
  • Strong understanding of mission engineering models and analysis methods.
  • Experience identifying technical, operational, and integration risks in complex architectures.
  • Familiarity with MILSATCOM and space-ground integration environments.
