Salary Range: The full pay range for this role is $107,200 - $178,600annually, and the good faith estimated starting pay for this position upon hire is $135,000 - $155,000 annually. We generally base our salary decisions on factors including but not limited to, relevant work and leadership experience, education, demonstrated performance, internal equity, and in some cases, geographic location.

Scope of Job:ย 

ย The Senior Substation Engineerย is responsible forย leading all aspects of substationย across the full portfolio ofย EDFpsย renewableย projects in North America, ensuring that substation designs meet company requirements, utility standards, and applicable codes.ย ย 

Work Mode:ย  Hybrid, based in San Diego, CA or Montreal, Quebec.ย  3 days on-site.

Responsibilities
  • Project substation and transmission line engineering:

    • Serveย asย theย subject matter expert for substationย and high-voltageย engineering, including physical design, protection and control design, major equipment specifications and electrical design studiesย such asย power flow, short-circuitย andย protection coordination.ย ย 
    • Provide technical leadership and resolution for all substation-related design issues during project implementation.ย ย 
    • Support transmission line design, interconnection applications, andย relatedย engineeringย activitiesย asย required. Develop design criteria and technical specifications; prepareย /ย review internal engineering deliverables, such as single-line diagramsย andย electricalย studies.ย 
    • Ensureย EDFpsย technical specificationsย remainย aligned with evolving industry best practices.ย 
    • Coordinate external electrical engineering resources required to supportย theย projectsย workload and supplementย internal technical activities.ย ย 
    • Support technical review of procurement packages, vendor submittals, and evaluations for major HV equipment such asย powerย transformers,ย HVย breakers. ย 
    • Coordinate project design with engineers within and outsideย EDFpsย engineering group. Support otherย departments,ย includingย constructionย andย O&M,ย onย substation design matters such asย lessons learnedย andย specification changes.ย ย ย 
    • Provide projectย engineeringย managementย support on select projects as needed.ย 
    • Actively participate in external technical seminars.ย 
    • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:ย ย 85% of time is spent in the office environment,ย utilizingย computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment.ย ย 

Approximatelyย 15% of the time is spent in the field nationally and internationally, visiting potential and existing projects, recognizing and assessing the sites, and meeting with project team members.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience in substation design.

  • Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) License is highly preferred.

Technical Expertise
  • Substation Design: Deep understanding of substation and transmission line equipment, design principles, and the full project lifecycle (from preliminary design to "as-built" packages).

  • Codes & Standards: Strong command of industry engineering codes and practices to ensure safe, cost-effective, and reliable designs.

  • Software: Proficient with electrical engineering design software such as ETAP, ASPEN, and PSCAD.

Leadership & Execution
  • Problem Solving: Capable of independently diagnosing and resolving complex engineering challenges.

  • Teamwork & Mentorship: Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and lead cross-functional project tasks.

  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational habits.

  • Process Improvement: Ability to support and drive continuous workflow improvements.

Travel & Physical Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel (3-5 days at a time) for site visits, technical team coordination, conferences, or partner meetings.
