The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is seeking an Audiovisual (AV) Engineer who acts as a primary technical resource for the university, responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of complex audiovisual systems in academic classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, and administrative spaces. This position focuses on system integrity and hardware maintenance, including diagnosing signal flow issues in integrated systems (e.g., Extron/AMX/Crestron), performing preventative maintenance, and leading equipment upgrades to ensure high-availability technology for the university community.

Additional responsibilities include consultation with faculty about classroom technology needs and potential solutions, identifying new technologies that will enhance the classroom teaching experience, and serving as a project manager for large and small projects. This position requires strong customer service skills and regular interaction with faculty and staff in the performance of duties as a representative of the ITS department.

This is a full-time, benefit and paid leave eligible position, with a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Key Job Responsibilities:

System Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware and software failures in integrated A/V systems, including control systems, switchers, Audio DSPs, projectors, and amplifier/speaker arrays.

  • Troubleshoot signal flow issues across various protocols, including HDBaseT, HDMI, Dante (Audio over IP), and A/V over IP.

  • Perform preventative maintenance routines (filter cleaning, lamp replacement, firmware updates, and cable management) to maximize equipment lifespan.

  • Utilize remote management tools (e.g., Extron GlobalViewer and other platform specific tools) to monitor system health and resolve issues remotely when possible.

Installation & Integration:

  • Work to install and commission new classroom technologies, including mounting displays, pulling low-voltage cabling, terminating connections (RJ45, BNC, XLR, Phoenix), cable management, and rack building.

  • Develop, lLoad and test control system code and audio DSP files; verify system functionality prior to deployment.

  • Coordinate with facilities and network infrastructure teams to ensure proper power and data connectivity for A/V endpoints.

  • Program and configure classroom systems utilizing University standards and integrating with existing IT systems.

User Support & Training:

  • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support to faculty and staff during critical teaching moments, adhering to SLAs to minimize classroom downtime.

  • Create and maintain "Quick Start" guides and technical documentation for in-room systems.

  • Train student workers or Tier 1 support staff on basic troubleshooting and system operation.

Administrative & Inventory Management:

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of spare parts, bulbs, and other AV equipment.

  • Document all support tickets, repairs, and system modifications in the IT Service Management (ITSM) ticketing system.

  • Vendor coordination: Manage RMAs for warranty repairs and coordinate with external integrators or equipment manufacturers during large, medium, and small scale campus projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Electronics, Media Technology, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting professional A/V systems.

  • Strong customer service orientation and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical faculty and staff.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Proficiency with signal flow and troubleshooting integrated systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron, AMX, Q-SYS).

  • Experience with audio processors and AV-to-USB bridging hardware to support software-codec conferencing applications (Teams, Zoom, etc.).

  • Knowledge of low-voltage cabling, termination, and soldering.
