What type of jobs can a civil engineer get?

A civil engineer can work in various fields such as construction, transportation, environmental engineering, and urban planning. They design, build, and maintain infrastructure like roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems, often requiring knowledge of design software and engineering principles.

What is the difference between Engineer Civil Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectEngineer Civil EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, licensure often requiredBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, licensure often required
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, design offices, urban planning projectsDesign offices, construction sites, focus on structural integrity
Industry UsageBroadly used across infrastructure, transportation, and urban developmentSpecialized in designing and analyzing structures like buildings and bridges

Both Civil Engineers and Structural Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on various infrastructure projects, while Structural Engineers focus specifically on the safety and stability of structures. Their roles often overlap, but each specializes in different aspects of construction and design.

What are some common challenges faced by civil engineers during large-scale construction projects?

Civil engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple stakeholders, managing project timelines, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Unexpected site conditions, such as soil instability or weather-related delays, can also impact project progress. Effective communication, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are essential skills for navigating these challenges and ensuring successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural design, mathematics, physics, and project management, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and professional licensure (such as the PE license). Familiarity with design and analysis software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and SAP2000 is commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help civil engineers effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies are vital for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and success of infrastructure projects.

What are civil engineers?

Civil engineers are professionals who design, build, supervise, operate, and maintain construction projects and systems in the public and private sectors. These projects include roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Civil engineers are essential in ensuring infrastructure is safe, sustainable, and efficient, often working closely with architects, contractors, and government officials throughout a project's lifecycle.

We partner with top energy producers across Canada and internationally to design safe, reliable, and efficient facilities from early concept through execution and operation.
We are seeking an Intermediate Civil Engineer who is ready to take on larger scopes with greater independence while continuing to grow technical and leadership capabilities within a multidisciplinary EPCM environment. In this role, you will contribute to civil and structural design on oil and gas facilities and infrastructure, support project execution, and assist in coordinating interfaces across disciplines.
Why Join Equinox?
  • Meaningful work on high-impact oil and gas facilities, pipelines, and SAGD projects
  • A people-focused culture that values technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Opportunity to lead civil/structural scopes on multidisciplinary EPCM projects
  • Exposure to diverse facilities projects across Canada and international markets
  • A flexible and supportive work environment designed for long-term career growth

What You'll Do
As an Intermediate Civil / Structural Engineer, you will help deliver safe, constructible, and code-compliant designs with increasing ownership over project components.
Technical & Civil/Structural Design
  • Lead and contribute to the design and analysis of earthworks, site grading, roads, and drainage systems for oil and gas facilities and related infrastructure, across project phases from concept through detailed engineering
  • Perform civil calculations, design checks, drawings review, and technical reports under limited supervision
  • Develop and review engineering sketches and markups for drafting staff to prepare 3D models and design drawings
  • Prepare material take-offs, quantities, and work packages; support procurement and construction activities with technical inputs
Coordination & Collaboration
  • Coordinate with process, piping, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines to gather inputs and resolve interface items
  • Participate in design reviews, incorporate feedback from senior engineers and stakeholders, and communicate effectively with internal teams and clients
Project Execution & Delivery
  • Support the delivery of civil deliverables to meet scope, schedule, and quality requirements
  • Provide bid/proposal input, vendor data reviews, and technical clarifications during procurement
  • Contribute to risk assessments, constructability reviews, and design optimization efforts
Construction & Field Support
  • Provide engineering support during construction, respond to field queries, and help resolve technical challenges
  • Participate in site visits/inspections as required and ensure designs remain practical and buildable
Safety, Quality & Compliance
  • Adhere to safety, environmental, and quality requirements throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support adherence to applicable codes and standards (e.g., CSA, CISC, NBC, provincial codes)
About You
You are an intermediate civil/structural engineer who enjoys practical design work, steady responsibility growth, and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. You bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (required)
  • P.Eng. eligibility/registration with APEGA (required)
  • 5-8 years of civil engineering experience, with EPCM oil & gas exposure preferred, although candidates with mining and municipal development backgrounds will also be considered
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • A detail-oriented, analytical approach to problem-solving

Technical Foundation
  • Understanding of earthworks design practices
  • Understanding of stormwater drainage systems and associated calculations
  • Understanding of secondary containment systems, including liners, underdrains, and wall systems
  • Understanding of road design, including geometry, sub-base and base course gravel, geotextiles, etc.
  • Familiarity with industry design standards and drawing practices
  • Experience collaborating with Geotechnical and other design disciplines

Software Proficiency
  • Working knowledge of  civil engineering tools such as  MS Excel and model review using Navisworks Freedom.
  • Experience with structural software (e.g. RISA, S-Frame, etc.) not mandatory but considered an asset
  • Civil3D experience considered an asset

Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Civil Professional Engineer - P.Eng or EIT with APEGA
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience in civil earthworks / grading engineering (oil & gas facilities experience preferred)
If you're passionate about engineering excellence, enjoy leading technical scopes, and want to contribute to innovative and impactful energy projects, we'd love to hear from you.
