The SCA's Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City's approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.

Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description SummaryThe Plumbing Engineer - Level B or C, with Level C being the highest title, reports to a Managing Engineer or Managing Architect, or a higher assignment level Engineer or Architect and is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, to achieve the objectives of the AuthorityJob Description

The Studio is looking for plumbing Engineers with experience in the design of related systems of buildings. Plumbing engineers with experience and knowledge of fire protection/suppression systems preferred.

General Responsibilities for both titles include:

  • Design of plumbing, and fire protection systems including domestic cold and hot water, water treatment, sanitary drainage and vent systems, storm drainage systems, pumping systems, natural gas distribution systems, special fire suppression systems (gaseous, water mist), acid waste and vent systems.
  • Providing multi-disciplinary design coordination on projects in commercial buildings such as schools, labs and commercial.
  • Responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed.
  • Provide overall coordination for design projects.
  • Perform and/or supervises the preparation of scope, pre-schematic, schematic, preliminary and construction documents including reports, calculations, drawings, and specifications.
  • Work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel as well as outside consultants, contractors, vendors, and various government agencies.
  • May function as a project leader reporting to an Engineer/Architect B or Engineer/Architect C, Managing Architect, Managing Engineer, or Director to plan and coordinate work with other Engineers and Architects.
  • May direct Associate (non-licensed) Engineers/Architects and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, and/or Technical Inspectors working on several less complex design and construction projects, such as new schools, modernizations, additions, leased space, and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).

Responsibilities specific to Engineer - B

  • Engineer B may supervise lower-level Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, Associate Architects and Associate Engineers, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians.
  • Work on several more complex design projects such as large primary schools, small intermediate schools, special types of buildings (e.g., special education schools), full modernizations, large additions, and specialized and/or numerous CIP projects.
  • May chair or participate in departmental seminars and workshops.
  • Trains and mentors lower level/new employees.
  • Performs the duties of Architect - A when necessary.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.

Responsibilities specific to Engineer C

  • Engineer - C is responsible for performing work in a variety of assignments and technical roles, as needed, and manages team members and/or contractors on projects to achieve the objectives of the Authority.
  • Works as a project leader on multiple, complex construction projects and major design and exploration programs to plan, assign, direct, manage, and supervise the work of stakeholders such as Engineers, Architects, Quality Assurance Specialists, Technical Inspectors, Associate Engineers, Associate Architects, and Architectural/Engineering Technicians, resolving any problems that occur.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ensures compliance to codes, standards, and that the project is completed on schedule.
  • Performs design review of work prepared by other engineers/architects.
  • Assists in preparing new design standards and procedures.
  • May be required to sign, seal and file engineering drawings.
  • May perform duties of Engineer - B and/or Engineer - A.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Baccalaureate Degree in related discipline from an accredited university/college plus:

Level B requires: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and three years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader

Level C requires: A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer and six years of full-time, paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; three years must be as a project engineer; project, team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility.

Current New York State Professional Engineer license is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment for both levels.

3 or more years of experience designing plumbing and fire protection systems, including experience working on medium to large commercial buildings required.

Proficiency in Revit MEP and Familiarity with codes and standards, specifically IPC, UPC, CPC, ASPE standards, LEED water efficiency, and NFPAis necessary.

Salary Range: $111,900.00 - $151,643.00

Level - C

Salary Range: $118,051.00 - $166,781.00

Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointmentrate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of activeCity or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning: three years of full time paid post-licensure experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility; a minimum of seven years total experience specializing in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. This can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work as long as the post-licensure experience requirement is met. Plumbing and Drainage: three years of full time paid post-licensure experience in plumbing and drainage work as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility; a minimum of seven years total experience specializing in plumbing and drainage work. This can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work as long as the post-licensure experience requirement is met. Structural: three years of full time paid post-licensure experience in structural work as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project team, or squad leader; or a comparable level of responsibility; a minimum of seven years total experience specializing in structural work. This can be any combination of pre-licensure and post-licensure work as long as the post-licensure experience requirement is met. Inspection: three years of full time paid post-licensure experience as a Professional Engineer; two years must be as a project engineer; project leader with inspection or observation duties regarding code compliance of critical areas of construction; or a comparable level of responsibility.
