What is an Engine Room Rating job?

An Engine Room Rating is a crew member responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a ship’s engine and machinery. They work under the supervision of engineers to ensure the vessel’s propulsion and auxiliary systems function properly. Duties include monitoring equipment, performing routine maintenance, and handling emergency repairs. Strong technical skills and physical stamina are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Engine Room Rating position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Room Rating, you need a solid understanding of marine engineering basics, mechanical aptitude, and often a valid STCW certification or equivalent maritime qualification. Familiarity with engine control systems, safety protocols, and routine maintenance tools is essential. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in a shipboard environment. These skills ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel's machinery, which is critical for both crew safety and smooth sailing.

What are some common challenges faced by Engine Room Ratings while working at sea?

Engine Room Ratings often encounter challenges such as working in hot, noisy, and confined spaces for extended periods. They must remain alert and responsive while dealing with machinery breakdowns, routine maintenance, and emergency situations, often during overnight shifts. Adapting to life at sea—such as rotating shift patterns and limited time on shore—can also require resilience and strong coping skills. Despite these challenges, many find the camaraderie among the crew and opportunities for skill development to be rewarding aspects of the role.

Job description

About Engine
At Engine, we're transforming business travel into something personalized, rewarding, and simple. For too long, managing travel and spend has been overwhelming and fragmented - we're here to change that. We believe the future of travel should be seamless and powered by technology that delights customers at every step. That's why we're building a platform that brings together corporate travel, a powerful charge card, and modern spend management in one place.
To make this vision real, we're looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel.
More than 30,000 companies already rely on Engine to support over 1 million travelers and billions in annual bookings each year. Cash flow positive with rapid growth, we pair exclusive Engine-only rates, industry-leading rewards, and intelligent automation to help businesses save money while delivering world-class personalization and convenience.
Backed by Telescope Partners, Blackstone, and Permira, Engine has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing travel and fintech platforms in North America, with honors including the Deloitte Fast 500 and Built In's Best Places to Work.
Your Mission
As Director, Business Operations (Supply), you will own the strategy and execution behind Engine's supply-side connectivity. Reporting to the VP of Customer Experience and Operations, you will lead across ARI (Availability, Rates & Inventory), connectivity strategy, Supply API integrations, and the technical enablement that supports our Relationship Managers as they bring chains and suppliers onto the platform.
This role demands someone who can command a room of senior leaders, drive alignment across complex cross-functional programs, and hold internal and external stakeholders accountable to outcomes. You bring structure to ambiguity, clarity to technical complexity, and rigor to every program you touch. The domain can be learned-what can't be taught is the discipline, the operating instinct, and the ability to move an organization.
What You'll Do
  • Own ARI operations end-to-end-rate validation, parity defense, gap closure, and at-risk inventory-building the reporting frameworks and team rhythms that keep Engine's supply healthy and measurable.
  • Define and execute connectivity strategy across PMS, CRS, GDS, channel managers, and 3rd-party routing systems-identifying what integrations are buildable and surfacing prioritized options to Product and Engineering.
  • Lead Supply API integration programs from scoping through production, coordinating across Engineering, Product, and Supply to drive reliability, reduce booking failures, and scale the supplier network.
  • Serve as the operational backbone for Relationship Managers supporting Chain and Supplier connectivity-translating commercial needs into integration requirements and ensuring new connectivity lands with full operational readiness.
  • Run complex, cross-functional programs with rigor-clear ownership, structured escalation paths, executive visibility, and a relentless focus on delivery. Keep the team on track internally and keep partners aligned externally.
What You'll Bring
  • 10+ years driving complex technical programs across Engineering, Product, and Operations with the structure and accountability that moves organizations forward.
  • Proven Leadership at Senior Levels. You've managed across senior leaders and cross-functional teams. You run the room, earn trust quickly, and drive alignment without relying on authority.
  • Program Rigor at Scale. You have a track record of running complex, multi-workstream programs that cut across the business-on time, with clear accountability, and measurable outcomes. You don't just track status; you move work forward.
  • Technical Fluency. You understand systems, APIs, data flows, and integration architecture well enough to engage credibly with Engineering and Product-ask the right questions, identify risk, and hold technical teams accountable.
  • Structured Problem Solver. You break ambiguous challenges into clear frameworks. You build the operating model others work inside of.
  • Data-Driven Operator. You build KPI frameworks that drive decisions, not just describe what happened. Comfortable working across Snowflake or similar data environments to surface actionable signals.
  • Domain Agnostic, Fast Learner. Industry experience in travel, hospitality, or supply systems is a plus-not a requirement. What matters is the discipline, the rigor, and the instinct to go deep fast.

Nice to Have: Background in marketplace, SaaS, or connectivity-heavy environments. Familiarity with PMS/CRS systems, GDS, VCC or payment integrations, or travel supply technology.
