What is the difference between Engine Performance Simulation Engineer vs Powertrain Engineer?

AspectEngine Performance Simulation EngineerPowertrain Engineer
Primary FocusModeling and simulating engine performance and efficiencyDesigning and optimizing entire powertrain systems, including engine, transmission, and drivetrain
Required SkillsEngine simulation software, thermodynamics, engine mechanicsPowertrain integration, system-level analysis, control systems
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, simulation software environmentsDesign studios, testing facilities, cross-disciplinary teams
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, heavy machineryAutomotive, commercial vehicles, hybrid/electric vehicle development

The Engine Performance Simulation Engineer specializes in creating detailed models to analyze engine behavior, while the Powertrain Engineer focuses on designing and integrating all components of the vehicle's power delivery system. Both roles require strong technical skills, but their scope and focus differ, with the simulation engineer concentrating on engine specifics and the powertrain engineer overseeing broader system integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engine Performance Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Performance Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Proficiency with simulation software such as GT-Power, MATLAB/Simulink, and CAD tools, along with knowledge of engine modeling methodologies, is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately predicting engine performance, optimizing designs, and collaborating efficiently in multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Engine Performance Simulation Engineers during project development?

Engine Performance Simulation Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately modeling complex engine behaviors, managing large volumes of simulation data, and ensuring that simulation results align with real-world test data. Collaborating closely with design, testing, and calibration teams is essential to interpret results and refine simulation models. Additionally, keeping up with rapidly evolving simulation tools and integrating them into existing workflows can be demanding. Overcoming these challenges requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams.

What does an Engine Performance Simulation Engineer do?

An Engine Performance Simulation Engineer is responsible for using advanced software tools to model, analyze, and predict the performance of internal combustion engines or alternative powertrains. They simulate how engines will operate under various conditions, optimize engine parameters for efficiency and emissions, and support the design process before physical prototypes are built. Their work helps manufacturers create engines that meet performance, fuel economy, and regulatory requirements more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Job description

Simulation Engineer, Lead

The Opportunity:

You build the synthetic worlds that help warfighters decide faster. As a Lead Simulation Engineer, you'll fuse Program of Record ( PoR ) sims, including NGST, AFSIM, AFMSTT, and SAFESIM, with real-time engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine as well as NVIDIA Omniverse to deliver credible, interoperable LVC environments for Indo-Pacific missions. You'll set technical direction, mentor engineers, and partner with operators to turn mission questions into data-driven outcomes.

What You'll Work On:

  • Lead architecture and technical delivery of mission-grade simulation solutions spanning AFSIM, AFMSTT, SAFESIM, and NGST and real-time engines such as Unity, Unreal, and Omniverse, ensuring scale, fidelity, and interoperability.
  • Integrate DIS, HLA, TENA, USD, and Omniverse pipelines for multi-domain LVC exercises, wargames, and operational analysis.
  • Translate operational concepts, including CONOPS, TTPs, MOP, and MOE into scenarios, models, and data flows aligned to Indo-Pacific mission threads.
  • Own sof tware quality and implement DevSecOps, CI / CD, automated testing, code reviews, and model validation against ground truth.
  • Mentor and grow a high-performing team to drive backlog, estimation, and delivery against mission milestones.
  • E nga ge with stakeholders across Service components such as air, maritime, cyber, and space to capture needs and demonstrate outcomes.
  • Advance performance and realism via GPU acceleration, multi-node orchestration, and sensor or weapon modeling.
  • Support capture and proposals with credible technical volumes, BOEs, and demos that reflect Indo-Pacific realities.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • Experience with PoR sims such as NGST, AFSIM, AFMSTT, and SAFESIM, including integrating models, scenarios, and data sources
  • Experience with Unity and Unreal Engine with C# or C++
  • Experience with real-time or near-real-time simulations
  • Experience with Git, including GitHub, GitLab, or Azure DevOps, CI / CD, test automation, and containerization such as Docker or Kubernetes
  • Experience with modeling and analysis translating operational needs into measurable outcomes such as MOP and MOE, scenario design, and validation
  • Knowledge of HLA, DIS, and TENA LVC architectures and gateway translation
  • Ability to obtain a TS / SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics and 2+ years of experience in data engineering, or 5+ years of experience in data engineering in lieu of a degree
