How much do energy modeling jobs pay per year?
What is an energy modeling?
An Energy Modeling job involves using software and analytical techniques to simulate the energy performance of buildings, systems, or industrial processes. Energy modelers assess energy consumption, efficiency measures, and cost-saving opportunities to optimize performance and sustainability. They work with architects, engineers, and policymakers to support energy-efficient design and compliance with regulatory standards.
What does an energy modeling do?
As an Energy Modeler, your daily tasks often include developing and calibrating building energy models, interpreting architectural and mechanical drawings, and preparing simulation reports to guide design decisions. You will frequently collaborate with architects, engineers, and sustainability consultants to evaluate various energy-saving strategies and ensure compliance with relevant codes and certifications. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you’ll present findings, answer technical questions, and sometimes participate in client meetings. This cross-disciplinary environment offers plenty of opportunities to learn from other professionals and contribute to sustainable building solutions.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in energy modeling, and why are they important?
To thrive in Energy Modeling, you need a strong understanding of building physics, HVAC systems, and energy codes, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, or IES VE, as well as credentials like LEED accreditation, is highly valued. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills are important soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure accurate modeling results and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimize energy efficiency in building projects.

Job description
At Scout Motors, you don't just design vehicles- you shape the future of the road. Our Engineering team is where bold ideas meet rigorous execution, building machines that are as durable and capable as the people who drive them. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with brilliant minds across disciplines, turning complex challenges into elegant, scalable solutions that meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and user experience. This is a place where your fingerprints are found on metal - where what you design gets built, driven, and remembered. If you're hungry to engineer something that matters, Scout Motors is where that ambition finds its highest gear.Â
The CAE Energy Team within Scout comprises a small group of highly qualified engineers responsible for assessing energy consumption in support of component & system specifications, and regulatory / customer focused drive cycles (including range, performance, towing, extremes of temperatures etc.). This role is specifically designed for an engineer in energy consumption modeling supporting the team.Â
Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:
- Advanced Simulation & Modeling - Conduct detailed simulations using MATLAB/Simulink (including Powertrain Blockset) to evaluate and optimize modeling inputs like aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and powertrain behavior.Â
- Range & Efficiency Target Setting - Define, track, and validate energyefficiency and range targets aligned with product requirements and customer expectations.Â
- CrossFunctional Collaboration - Work closely with aerodynamics, thermal, and powertrain teams to integrate energysaving technologies such as lightweight materials and regenerative braking systems.Â
- Energy Loss Analysis - Identify sources of energy loss and recommend design modifications to maximize range and minimize power consumption.Â
- Correlation & Validation - Compare simulation outputs with realworld driving data to refine models and ensure accuracy across varying conditions.Â
- Technical Documentation - Produce clear reports, insights, and recommendations to guide design decisions and future product improvements.Â
- Continuous Improvement - Develop new methods and strategies for improving energy efficiency, including advanced materials, aerodynamic enhancements, and energymanagement performance.Â
- Model Development - Build, refine, and maintain simulation models.Â
- Script Development - Create scripts to automate analysis, improve workflows, and support tool development.
- Artificial Intelligence - Explore and evaluate emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and trends to derive insights and improve CAE model performance. Develop, test, and deploy AI/ML models into existing systems and workflows to optimize model accuracy, scalability, and efficiencyÂ
Location & Travel Expectations:
- This role may be based out of the Scout Motors corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC or Novi, Michigan.
- This role requires 3-4 days per week in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events.Â
- Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.
We expect all Scout employees to have integrity, curiosity, resourcefulness, and strive to exhibit a positive attitude, as well as a growth mindset. You'll be comfortable with change and flexible in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You'll take a collaborative approach to achieve ambitious goals. Here's what else you'll bring:Â
- Education/Certifications: A Bachelor's degree in a technical engineering fieldÂ
- Years of Experience required in type of role: 8+ years of experience in an automotive vehicle modeling environmentÂ
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills Â
- ExperienceinMATLAB/Simulink, including power trainblockset, model building and script writing. Â
- Experience in tool developmentÂ
- Strong analytical skillswith an understanding of aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and their impact on electric and hybrid vehicle efficiencyÂ
- Familiarity with electric vehicle systems, such as battery management, powertrain control, and regenerativebrakingÂ
Beneficial Experience / Bonus QualificationsÂ
- Cosimulation Experience between MATLAB/Simulink and GTSuiteÂ
- Familiarity with GTSuite and electrifiedvehicle thermal systemsÂ
- Ability to conduct physical vehicle range testing across varying temperatures, terrains, and load conditionsÂ
The benefits of joining Scout include the chance to build products and a company from the ground up. This is a chance to create something new and lasting - with an iconic brand at its foundation. In addition, Scout provides competitive compensation and benefits to support your physical, mental, and financial wellbeing.
