Job description

The APEX Power Co. Project in Hubbard, TX, currently under Phase 1 construction, is expected to expand to 1.6 GW. It features a diverse mix of generation technologies, including Siemens SGT-800/400 simple cycle turbines, MAN/Everllence 18V51/60G gas reciprocating engines, GE LM6000/LM2500 simple cycle turbines, Pratt & Whitney FT8 simple cycle turbines, and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling flexible, reliable power output. Future expansion may include additional GE aero and large frame units (6B, 7FA/7FB/7H) in simple or combined cycle configurations, allowing the plant to efficiently meet varying energy demands while supporting data center grid reliability.

Opportunity Summary

The Energy Management System (EMS) Engineer provides technical leadership for the plant's Energy Management System (EMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and real-time operational monitoring systems throughout commissioning and commercial operations. This role supports EMS architecture, system integration, real-time monitoring of plant generation and electrical system performance, and optimization of power flow, grid connectivity, and dispatch capabilities. Working closely with Operations, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, OEMs, and contractors, the EMS Engineer develops and maintains EMS and SCADA solutions that improve situational awareness, operational reliability, and grid performance.

As EMS Engineer, your responsibilities specific to the Pre-Commissioning Phase include:

  • Lead commissioning and functional testing of the Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA, communications infrastructure, and associated monitoring systems to ensure safe and reliable startup.
  • Coordinate EMS integration with DCS, PLC, turbine controls, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), electrical systems, and plant instrumentation to support complete operational visibility.
  • Verify EMS displays, one-line diagrams, alarms, historian interfaces, real-time data acquisition, communications, and operator graphics prior to commercial operation.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), startup activities, and system turnover while resolving EMS, SCADA, and communications issues using structured Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Ensure EMS databases, network architecture, operating displays, documentation, software backups, communications mapping, and CMMS/EAM records are complete for operational turnover.

Your scope of responsibility as EMS Engineer includes the following primary functions:

  • Provide technical leadership for the plant's Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA, and real-time operational monitoring systems to maximize plant reliability, situational awareness, and operational performance.
  • Monitor real-time plant generation, electrical loading, power flows, transmission interfaces, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and grid operating conditions to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
  • Develop, configure, maintain, and optimize EMS applications, SCADA displays, one-line diagrams, operator graphics, alarms, historian interfaces, and real-time data acquisition systems.
  • Analyze EMS, SCADA, and operational data to identify system abnormalities, communication failures, equipment issues, and opportunities to improve plant performance and grid reliability.
  • Support Control Room Operations by providing engineering expertise related to plant dispatch, operating limits, power flow monitoring, equipment loading, and system availability.
  • Coordinate EMS integration with DCS, PLC, turbine control systems, electrical protection systems, and plant communication networks while supporting system upgrades and modifications.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations involving EMS, SCADA, communications, or operational monitoring system failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage EMS projects, software upgrades, cybersecurity improvements, and system modifications while supporting Configuration Management and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, OEMs, contractors, utilities, and system vendors to support commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous system improvement.
  • Ensure EMS activities comply with applicable safety, cybersecurity, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements while supporting reliable plant operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe, reliable, and compliant plant operations.

Working Relationships

The EMS Engineer reports to the Plant Engineering & Reliability Manager and collaborates with the IC&E Supervisor, Operations, Maintenance, plant leadership, and NAES Corporate Engineering Support Services to support safe and reliable plant operation. This role provides technical guidance to Operations and Maintenance personnel on electrical systems and equipment reliability.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The EMS Engineer works a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, alternating between days and nights to support continuous 24/7 operations. This position will occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.

Compensation

This position offers an annual base salary ranging from $141,000 to $166,212 and includes eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Professional Expertise & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field is required. Equivalent power generation, industrial automation, EMS, SCADA, or military experience may be considered.
  • Experience supporting Energy Management Systems (EMS), SCADA, real-time monitoring systems, or utility control systems within power generation or other industrial facilities.
  • Working knowledge of power generation, electrical transmission interfaces, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), gas turbines, reciprocating engines, and balance-of-plant equipment.
  • Experience configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting EMS, SCADA, historian, communications, and real-time operational monitoring systems.
  • Working knowledge of DCS, PLC, industrial communication protocols, networked control systems, and system integration.
  • Experience monitoring plant generation, power flows, equipment loading, operating limits, and grid conditions using EMS and SCADA applications.
  • Knowledge of electrical system operations, grid connectivity, transmission interfaces, and power system monitoring.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity, NERC standards, industrial networking, and regulatory requirements applicable to control and monitoring systems.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Engineering, contractors, OEMs, and utility representatives to improve system reliability and plant performance.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
