Energy Internships information

What is an energy internship?

Energy internships are short-term work experiences offered by companies or organizations in the energy sector, such as renewable energy firms, utilities, oil and gas companies, or government agencies. These internships allow students or recent graduates to gain practical skills, industry knowledge, and professional connections by working on real-world projects related to energy production, management, or policy. Energy internships can cover areas like engineering, research, sustainability, project management, or environmental analysis. They are valuable for building a career in the energy industry and often serve as a stepping stone to full-time positions.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during an energy internship?

As an energy intern, you may be involved in a variety of projects, such as supporting research on renewable energy technologies, assisting with energy efficiency audits, analyzing data related to energy consumption, or helping to prepare reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders. The specific projects often depend on the organization's focus, whether it's utilities, renewable energy, consulting, or government agencies. Collaboration with engineers, analysts, and project managers is common, providing you with valuable exposure to real-world challenges and industry practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an energy internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Energy Internship, you need a foundation in engineering, environmental science, or related studies, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or energy modeling tools, as well as basic data analysis skills, is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities help interns effectively contribute to projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are essential for gaining practical experience, supporting innovation, and preparing for a successful career in the energy sector.

Energy Analysts are full-time professionals responsible for analyzing energy data and market trends. Internships often serve as a pathway to full-time roles like Energy Analyst, with similar industry environments but different experience levels.

  • Assist with power supply planning, resource evaluation, and system expansion studies for both fossil and renewable generation assets.
  • Support engineering, performance, and benchmarking evaluations of power plants and delivery systems.
  • Analyze engineering, operational, and economic data to support technical assessments and consulting studies.
  • Assist in the development of lifecycle cost analyses, incorporating capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance assumptions, and economic forecasts.
  • Support financial and economic evaluations, including cost benefit analysis and investment planning assessments.
  • Assist with technical and regulatory impact assessments, evaluating implications of policies, standards, and regulatory requirements on utility systems.
  • Support transmission and distribution modeling and study work using industrystandard power system software tools.
  • Contribute to site assessments, due diligence activities, and condition assessments for utility infrastructure and assets.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of engineering drawings, technical documentation, and project deliverables.
  • Support risk assessments related to technical, operational, and business considerations for utility projects.
  • Develop technical reports and client presentations that summarize analysis, assumptions, and recommendations.
  • Support project teams with client deliverables, including engineering reviews, financial analysis, and planning studies for utility systems.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and support multiple Energy & Utilities consulting engagements as needed.
  • Comply with all company policies, safety requirements, and quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, Finance, Accounting, or related degree from an accredited program required.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
