What is energy efficiency and why is it important?

Energy efficiency refers to using less energy to perform the same task or provide the same service. This is achieved through technologies and practices that reduce energy waste and optimize energy use in homes, businesses, and industries. Improving energy efficiency helps lower energy bills, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and conserves natural resources. It is a key strategy for combating climate change while also benefiting the economy by creating jobs and driving innovation.

What are the most common challenges faced by professionals working in energy efficiency roles?

Professionals working in energy efficiency often face challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies, navigating complex regulatory environments, and securing buy-in from stakeholders for new initiatives. Additionally, they may encounter difficulties in quantifying energy savings and demonstrating return on investment to clients or management. Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, building managers, and policy makers, are essential to overcoming these challenges and achieving energy-saving goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy efficiency specialist?

To thrive as an Energy Efficiency Specialist, you need a strong background in engineering, environmental science, or a related field, often coupled with certifications like CEM (Certified Energy Manager). Familiarity with energy modeling software, building management systems, and data analysis tools is crucial. Exceptional communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help you effectively collaborate with clients and stakeholders. These competencies enable you to identify, recommend, and implement energy-saving measures that reduce costs and support sustainability goals.

We do that by creating a people-first culture built on trust, accountability, and transparency; where every employee - regardless of position, role, or identity is treated with respect and given an equal chance to thrive.

This role will primarily support measure development for a commercial, industrial and agricultural midstream energy efficiency program, working closely with the client’s engineering, program and evaluation teams to develop, maintain and evolve lighting and non-lighting measures delivered through a network of distributors and other market actors. For this opportunity, you're a great fit if you can... Collaborate and work within a multi-disciplinary team to perform and lead technical work supporting energy efficiency programs. Author measure packages, including program-specific cost-effectiveness calculators, and document assumptions, data sources, and citations. Develop preliminary and final cost-effectiveness analyses using utility cost test and total resource cost test methodologies. Lead development of calculation tools and workpapers for new measures and approaches for delivery to clients and evaluators. Update measures for changes in baseline performance, measure costs, savings, mandatory standards, and energy code revisions. Become a recognized subject matter expert in at least one engineering technology relevant to the midstream program (e.g., commercial lighting, HVAC & controls, refrigeration, compressed air, agriculture). Provide QA/QC of engineering work products and review colleagues’ technical work, communicating feedback in a timely manner. Review filings, utility commission documents, and evaluator documents for technical accuracy and sound engineering practices; communicate findings and recommendations to engineering and program partners. Support program and market intelligence analytics, including forecasting cost-effectiveness ratios and maintaining planning assumptions in program tools. Coordinate with evaluation staff on research projects, pilots, and evaluation plans related to midstream measures. Prioritize safety in all actions and tasks.

For this exciting career opportunity, you must have... Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or a related technical field) or graduate degree, with 5-10+ years of combined experience in energy efficiency consulting, program implementation, or engineering. Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Excellent technical and non-technical writing and communication abilities; ability to convey findings to diverse technical and non-technical audiences. Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with SQL, Power BI, or other data visualization and analysis tools is a plus. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on complex technical projects and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic setting. Based in Oregon or the greater Western United States preferred.
