Job description

Are you looking for a role where your technical expertise directly supports safe, compliant nuclear waste operations? Can you see yourself performing precise gamma spectrometry and waste characterization activities that ensure waste shipments are executed safely and efficiently? Do you want to make a meaningful impact on environmental protection while supporting the Whiteshell (WL) Restoration Project? What will you be doing!

  • Operating analytical field equipment (e.g., gamma spectrometry equipment).
  • Ensure analytical equipment is properly maintained and functions within clearly defined parameters.
  • Creating and issuing radiological analysis reports to Waste Generators and other personnel involved with waste management processes.
  • Performing radioactivity calculations to facilitate waste classification for disposition and/or shipment.
  • Performing other duties in support of the WL Waste Management Program, including assisting.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Post-secondary education (University degree BSc) or College Diploma in a scientific field, or equivalent knowledge earned through a combination of education and relevant experience in the field of radioactive waste characterization.
    • Valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods (including Class 7 Materials) Certification.
    • Successful completion of the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) training course is considered an asset.
  • Experience
    • A minimum of three to five years' experience in a role related to environmental characterization or radioactivity measurements.
    • Experience with Quality Control / Quality Assurance principles and applications.
    • Experience with radiation and/or hazardous substance detection instruments and techniques.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability/desire to perform field activities in all environmental conditions.
    • Confidence in using complex software to quantify radioactivity or hazardous substances.
    • Strong ability to understand and incorporate technical vocabulary into daily work vocabulary.
    • Ability to recognize when a lack of knowledge and understanding prevents the effective uptake and application of work activities and processes, and the ability to request further or repeated explanation from more senior Technologists and/or supervisors.
    • Skills in broad data science, including familiarity with the use of statistics, scientific modelling, and visualization of data.
    • Ability to follow detailed and intricate operating procedures and rely on and consult such documents for reference even after becoming proficient.
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills to influence and educate various audiences, including operations staff of various backgrounds, clients, supply chain vendors, peers/colleagues and management.
    • Ability to produce clearly written procedures and reports of measurement results.
    • Demonstrate computer literacy, including the use/customization of spreadsheets, databases and word processing software.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines, with an ability to manage and prioritize a workload that involves several different projects.
    • Ability to gather, analyze and assemble a variety of technical information under firm schedule requirements.
    • Possess a high level of motivation with demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a team environment.
    • Ability to focus on fine analytical details for long periods of time as required.
    • Working ability with MS Office software, especially Word and Excel, and analytical scientific software, such as gamma spectrometry software or other spectrometry software.
    • Understanding of Radiation Protection principles and practices is an asset.
    • A strong working knowledge of Decommissioning and Waste Management operations, processes and procedures is an asset.
    • Knowledge of the application of Waste Acceptance Criteria is considered an asset.

  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's "Standard on Security Screening" and the "Policy on Government Security."

Working Conditions:

  • Working schedule: We have a compressed work week: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • This position is part of the Whiteshell Tech Employee Group union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you'll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
  • This role is designated a Nuclear Energy Worker and will be expected to work in various settings, including the laboratory/industrial facility, field and office and must be prepared to work alternate hours pending operational requirements.
  • Work areas may contain a variety of hazardous materials such as acids, caustics, flammable organics, etc., and staff are required to have or take the
    appropriate training to be competent in working in such an environment.
  • The Waste Characterization Technologist will be expected to spend approximately 80% of their time in the field, and 20% in a shared office space.
