What is a data analyst internship?

A Data Analyst Internship is a temporary position where interns gain hands-on experience in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support business decisions. Interns typically work with large datasets, use tools like Excel, SQL, and Python, and create reports or visualizations. The role helps develop technical skills, analytical thinking, and an understanding of how data-driven insights impact an organization. It is a great opportunity for students or recent graduates to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting.

What typical projects or responsibilities might I have as a data analyst intern?

As a Data Analyst Intern, you'll likely work on tasks such as cleaning and organizing raw data, running analysis to identify trends or patterns, and assisting with the creation of reports and data visualizations for your team. You may collaborate closely with senior analysts or cross-functional teams to support ongoing projects and business initiatives. Interns commonly get exposure to real-world datasets, participate in team meetings, and sometimes contribute to presentations or process improvement efforts. This hands-on experience is designed to help you develop both your technical and analytical skills while gaining insight into the role of data in business decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a data analyst internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst Intern, you need a solid grounding in statistics, data interpretation, and problem-solving, often backed by coursework or a degree in fields like mathematics, computer science, or economics. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Excel, SQL databases, and data visualization software like Tableau or Power BI is highly valuable. Attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills for success in this position. These competencies are crucial for accurately analyzing data, drawing insights, and clearly presenting findings to support business decisions.

To do it, we believe in supporting each other, because great work happens when people come together, and that means building a team where anyone can spark an idea, and where everyone can make a difference. When you partner with us, you're at the center of a vast network of risk, insurance, employee benefits, retirement and wealth management specialists that bring clarity to a changing world with tailored solutions and unrelenting advocacy - so you're ready for tomorrow.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a highly skilled Data Analyst with strong, hands-on experience in Applied Epic and Power BI to join our team. This role is central to maintaining, structuring, and leveraging data from Applied Epic to support operational decision-making, business performance tracking, and strategic initiatives across the organization. The successful candidate will take ownership of data quality metrics, build and maintain Power BI reporting infrastructure, develop Epic automation, and drive system efficiencies. Demonstrated expertise in Applied Epic's data structure and reporting capabilities, combined with advanced Power BI skills, is essential to success in this role. This is a great opportunity for someone who is detail-oriented, analytical, and excited about transforming insurance and brokerage data into actionable, visual business intelligence.

What You'll Do

  • Extract, analyze, and interpret data directly from Applied Epic, using advanced knowledge of its data structure, tables, and relationships to support business reporting and analytics

  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports, and data visualizations that present KPIs and operational metrics to stakeholders at all levels of the organization

  • Develop and manage data models and ETL processes connecting Applied Epic to Power BI, ensuring scalable, reliable, and efficient reporting solutions

  • Build and maintain Epic automation (including VBA-based tools and scripts) to streamline data extraction, reduce manual processes, and improve system efficiency

  • Establish and enforce data quality and validation processes to ensure accuracy and consistency across all Applied Epic-sourced reports and downstream systems

  • Write and optimize queries (SQL and/or Epic-native reporting tools) to support ad hoc and recurring reporting needs

  • Partner with underwriting, finance, operations, and leadership teams to gather reporting requirements and translate them into effective Power BI solutions

  • Support projects involving the migration, integration, or optimization of Applied Epic data with other business platforms (e.g., finance systems, CRM, data warehouses)

  • Maintain documentation of data definitions, report logic, and dashboard structures to support long-term data governance

  • Stay current on Applied Epic updates/releases and Power BI features to continuously improve reporting capabilities

What We're Looking For

  • Required: Significant hands-on experience working directly within Applied Epic, specifically in data extraction, reporting, and analysis

  • Required: Strong, proven experience with Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, data modeling, and building interactive dashboards from scratch

  • Required: Proficiency in SQL and Power Query (other query languages an asset)

  • A background in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field is considered an asset

  • Proficiency in VBA coding for automation and process improvement

  • Solid understanding of data modeling principles, particularly as they apply to reporting, dashboard integration, and Epic's underlying schema

  • Experience in the insurance or brokerage industry is a strong asset

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a sharp eye for accuracy and detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders

  • Comfortable working within Windows-based systems and standard business applications (Microsoft Office suite, etc.)

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects independently in a fast-paced environment

Why Join HUB?

  • An exceptional, welcoming, and inclusive company culture

  • Excellent compensation, benefits, RRSP match, referral incentives, and company perks

  • Work flexibility

  • Paid educational training and vast learning opportunities

  • Room for advancement and growth within the organization
