Energy Automation information

What is energy automation?

Energy automation refers to the use of technology and control systems to manage, monitor, and optimize the generation, distribution, and consumption of energy. This often involves integrating smart devices, sensors, and software to automate processes in power plants, industrial facilities, or buildings. The goal is to increase efficiency, reduce energy costs, and enhance reliability and sustainability. Energy automation plays a crucial role in smart grids and the transition to renewable energy sources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy automation specialist?

To thrive as an Energy Automation Specialist, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, automation systems, and energy management, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLC programming, and industry-standard protocols like Modbus or IEC 61850 is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and address complex technical challenges. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable, efficient, and safe automation solutions in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

How does an energy automation professional typically collaborate with other departments to implement new automated solutions?

Energy Automation professionals frequently work alongside engineering, IT, and operations teams to design and deploy automation systems that optimize energy usage. Collaboration often involves cross-functional meetings to align technical requirements, address integration challenges, and ensure system compatibility. These professionals also coordinate with maintenance and safety teams to ensure smooth operation and compliance with industry standards. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as successful automation projects require input and cooperation from multiple stakeholders.

What is the difference between Energy Automation vs Energy Systems Technician?

AspectEnergy AutomationEnergy Systems Technician
CertificationsPLC programming, control systems, automation certificationsElectrical, HVAC, or control system certifications
Work EnvironmentControl rooms, industrial facilities, power plantsFieldwork, installation sites, maintenance facilities
Industry UsagePower generation, manufacturing, building automationEnergy plants, HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure

Energy Automation specialists focus on designing, programming, and maintaining control systems that automate energy processes. Energy Systems Technicians handle installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of energy-related equipment. While both roles work within the energy industry and require technical certifications, Energy Automation emphasizes control systems and programming, whereas Energy Systems Technicians focus on hands-on equipment maintenance.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day (position overview)
As a subject-matter expert, the position is critical for leading the design, evaluation, and deployment of robust industrial robotic solutions for manufacturing environments, ensuring they are fit-for-purpose, reliable, and scalable. To achieve these objectives, the role will focus on three core areas: Robotic Solution Design & Deployment, which covers the end-to-end creation of automation systems; System Analysis & Optimization, focused on evaluating performance and driving reliability improvements; and Technical Strategy & Leadership, which involves setting operational plans and guiding the organization's automation roadmap. Given the focus on advanced robotics and strategic impact, the ideal candidate will be a recognized master in mechatronics or a related engineering discipline. This individual must possess extensive experience in designing and implementing complex automation systems, proficiency in relevant programming and design software, and the ability to influence technical direction at a leadership level.
How You'll Make an Impact (responsibilities)
• Establish operational plans and technical roadmaps for the adoption of new automation technologies in line with functional objectives.
• Evaluate existing manufacturing processes to identify and justify opportunities for automation and robotics implementation.
• Design and evaluate robotic cells, lines, and integrated automation systems.
• Define robot selection criteria including payload, reach, accuracy, speed, and safety.
• Specify end-effectors, tooling, vision, and sensing solutions for industrial use cases.
• Support programming approaches including offline programming and adaptive control.
• Assess feasibility, risks, and limitations of robotics use cases.
• Capture lessons learned and contribute to robotics standards and best practices.
• Problem Solving: Analyze and troubleshoot mechanical issues, providing effective solutions to enhance product performance and reliability
What You Bring (requirements)
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Extensive professional experience (typically 5+ years) in designing, deploying, and maintaining industrial robotics and automation systems.
• Demonstrated experience as a subject-matter expert, leading technical projects and influencing strategic decisions in an R&D or advanced manufacturing environment.
• Strong knowledge of major robot platforms and ecosystem components.
• Deep understanding of safety standards, risk assessment, and industrial compliance.
• Experience with commissioning, debugging, and production support of robotic systems.
• Strong problem-solving mindset with shopfloor credibility.
• Ability to translate operational needs into robotic solutions.
• Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
