What is an energy auditor?

A career that supports environmental sustainability, an energy auditor closely monitors and inspects client property for energy consumption and waste. Because tracking information on energy consumption leads to awareness and response, energy auditors play a vital role in more efficient and sustainable energy usage practices. A career as an energy auditor requires you have some formal qualifications and education, typically a bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or a field with coursework closely related to green energy and conservation. You should have strong communications skills, thorough knowledge of regulatory requirements, and the ability to stoop, crawl, and enter confined spaces as part of your job duties.

What does an energy auditor do?

An Energy Auditor is a professional who evaluates the energy efficiency of homes, businesses, or industrial facilities. They conduct on-site inspections, analyze energy usage, and identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs. Their work often includes using specialized equipment to detect inefficiencies, preparing detailed reports, and recommending practical solutions like insulation upgrades or equipment replacement. By doing so, they help clients save money on utility bills and reduce their environmental impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an energy auditor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Energy Auditor, you need a solid understanding of building systems, energy efficiency principles, and typically a relevant degree or certification such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager). Familiarity with energy modeling software, data logging equipment, and reporting tools is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify savings and clearly present recommendations to clients. These skills ensure accurate assessments, actionable solutions, and client trust, driving successful energy efficiency projects.

What are some common challenges energy auditors face when conducting site assessments, and how can they prepare for them?

Energy Auditors often encounter challenges such as limited access to building areas, incomplete historical energy data, and varying cooperation from facility staff. To prepare, auditors should communicate clearly with building management ahead of the visit to arrange access, request relevant documentation, and outline the audit process. Flexibility and strong interpersonal skills are essential, as conditions on-site can change quickly. Utilizing a thorough checklist and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of building systems can also help auditors overcome unexpected obstacles during assessments.

About the Role
Sustainable Comfort, Inc., a green building and energy efficiency consulting firm specializing in multifamily housing, is seeking an Energy Rater / HERS Rater to join our growing field team.
Ideal candidates will have experience in residential energy efficiency, building science, construction, engineering, weatherization, energy auditing, HVAC, or a related field. HERS Rater certification and direct building performance experience are preferred.
This is a field-focused role combining hands-on inspections and performance testing at multifamily construction sites with energy modeling, reporting, documentation, and project coordination. • Evaluate insulation, air sealing, HVAC, ventilation, and other energy-related building components.
  • Prepare and support HERS energy models and review construction plans and project documentation.
  • Document field observations, testing results, deficiencies, and required corrective actions.
  • Communicate directly with contractors and project teams regarding inspection findings and program requirements.
  • Coordinate site visits and track inspection and testing milestones throughout construction.
  • Support projects working toward HERS, ENERGY STAR, LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, Passive House/Phius, and other energy-efficiency certifications and programs.

What We're Looking For
We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in building performance and a background in one or more of the following areas:
  • Building science or residential energy efficiency
  • HERS Ratings, energy auditing, weatherization, or BPI
  • Residential or multifamily construction
  • Construction inspection or QA/QC
  • HVAC, ventilation, or other building systems
  • Engineering or architecture
  • Green building and energy-efficiency programs

HERS Rater certification and direct energy rating experience are preferred, but not required. Candidates with relevant experience who are interested in developing their building performance expertise are encouraged to apply. SCI provides company-paid training and certifications to support continued professional development. If you have a strong foundation in buildings, construction, engineering, or energy efficiency and are interested in building performance, we encourage you to apply.
Qualifications
  • Relevant education, training, or professional experience in a related field.
  • Strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply technical standards, testing procedures, and program requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and interest in regularly working at active construction sites.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, with reasonable accommodations available as required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.

Preferred experience includes HERS certification or training, BPI credentials, diagnostic testing, energy modeling, residential or multifamily construction, energy auditing/weatherization, RESNET standards, and green building programs such as ENERGY STAR, LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, or Passive House/Phius.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $54,000-$73,000 annually, based on relevant experience, certifications, technical knowledge, and demonstrated skills.
SCI's compensation and benefits package includes:
