What does an endpoint security consultant do?

An Endpoint Security Consultant specializes in protecting an organization's devices, such as laptops, desktops, and mobile devices, from cyber threats. They assess potential vulnerabilities, recommend and implement security solutions, and ensure that all endpoints comply with security policies. Their work often includes deploying antivirus software, configuring firewalls, and monitoring for suspicious activity to minimize risks. Consultants also provide guidance on best practices and may help respond to security incidents. Their expertise is crucial for organizations looking to safeguard sensitive data and maintain regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges an endpoint security consultant faces when working with diverse client environments?

Endpoint Security Consultants often encounter challenges such as integrating new security solutions with legacy systems, managing device diversity (e.g., Windows, macOS, mobile), and addressing varying levels of cybersecurity maturity among clients. Consultants must quickly assess each environment's unique risks and tailor their approach to fit specific business needs while ensuring regulatory compliance. Strong communication and adaptability are essential, as the role often involves educating clients and collaborating closely with IT teams to implement effective protection strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an endpoint security consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Endpoint Security Consultant, you need expertise in cybersecurity principles, endpoint protection strategies, risk assessment, and often a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with security tools such as antivirus platforms, EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) solutions, SIEM systems, and certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+ are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help consultants assess threats and educate clients. These skills and qualifications are essential for safeguarding organizations' endpoints against evolving cyber threats and ensuring robust security postures.

At Capital One, we believe in the values of Excellence and Doing the Right Thing. We are a technology-oriented company delivering financial products to market through modern technology and constant innovation at a massive scale. That innovation includes leveraging technology to deliver the best cybersecurity solutions for our internal and external customers.

As a candidate for Endpoint Security Product role, you're able to seamlessly switch from executive-level risk conversations to diving deep into controls and technology to driving high level, strategic discussions around roadmaps and security solutions. You are a clear thinker, thrive in working across teams, and an expert in dealing with ambiguity. You believe that a core component of security's role is to enable the business, not just to secure it, and the solutions you bring to life are aligned to the needs of our engineering community and business partners. You thrive in working in a fast paced, technologically forward leaning environment and are not afraid to push the boundaries of security capabilities.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and communicate a risk-based and data-driven strategy and outcome-driven roadmaps for enterprise security services, solutions, and capabilities, in partnership with engineering and operations partners, customers, and other stakeholders

  • Analyze and select alternatives based on threat, risk, desirability, feasibility, and viability

  • Keep abreast of advances in industry to address the threat landscape

  • Advise executive decision makers based on business and technology risk grounded in threat

  • Facilitate build vs. buy decisions to identify optimal strategies for addressing business and technology risks

  • Develop and lead RFI/RFPs to assess the market and/or procure effective cyber solutions

  • Maintain technical and risk credibility with your own team and with partners across the enterprise

  • Maintain close ties to various stakeholders, developers, and engineers across the company, ensuring the services we create meet their needs as products evolve

  • Iterate quickly and see the products through to production and scale

  • Establish product value propositions, metrics, and key indicators

  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, and lead those around you to be their best

About You...

  • You have strong consulting and analytical skills

  • You have the ability to foster collaborative, open, working relationships with technology groups and other stakeholders, including vendor relationships

  • You have demonstrated clear communication skills and ability to interact effectively at all levels of an organization, and to influence senior management and executives (Including translating technical information based on specific audiences)

  • You have experience managing multiple high-visibility and high-impact enterprise cybersecurity projects with cross-functional teams while maintaining superior results including planning, development and management of technical requirements, design, testing and deployment of security solutions

  • You have a passion for cybersecurity.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification

  • At least 6 years of experience working in cybersecurity or information technology

  • At least 3 years of experience translating cybersecurity strategy and analysis into product requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Cybersecurity, Systems Engineering, or Computer Science

  • 7+ years of experience solving cyber technical challenges

  • 7+ years of experience translating business strategy and analysis into products

  • 4+ years of Cyber product owner experience

  • 2+ years of experience in technical writing

  • 2+ years of hands-on JIRA experience

  • Experience in regulated financial services organizations or tech companies

  • 2 or more professional certifications: SAFe, PMP, CSPO, CISSP, GIAC, CISM, CCSP, AWS Security, AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, or AWS Solutions Architect

  • Deep expertise in endpoint security domains, including telemetry-driven detection and response, forensics, insider threat, ecosystem security, malware protection, and endpoint control frameworks such as allowlisting or device governance.

  • Strong understanding of endpoint security architectures and systems, including endpoint agents, telemetry pipelines, detection workflows, and integration with SIEM or XDR platforms.

  • Experience leading end-to-end product lifecycle for endpoint security capabilities including evaluation, vendor selection, onboarding, and enterprise-scale rollout in partnership with third-party, engineering, architecture, ISO, and risk teams.

  • Experience with developer security ecosystem including IDE security, AI-powered development tools governance, and modern software supply-chain security controls.
