Job Summary:

The primary focus of the Senior Engineering Team Lead (Sr.ETL) is to build, grow, and manage a high-performing engineering team. The Sr.ETL serves primarily as a professional supervisor focusing on organizational development, team retention, and cultivating a high-performance culture. While a successful Sr.ETL must maintain a firm understanding of complex control system design and technologies to guide and lead the team effectively, project management and hands-on technical execution combined will encompass no more than 10% of their dedicated time. The Sr.ETL will collaborate with technical leadership, project managers, other supervisors, and company leadership to ensure their team’s safety, success, and seamless execution of projects across the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervisory, Leadership & Customer Success (Primary Focus - 90%+ of Time)

  • Responsible for the safety, training, development, and career progression of team members.
  • Build and manage capable engineers to deliver excellent customer care and support, ensuring the team communicates in an effective, positive, and proactive manner.
  • Actively drive the recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding of engineers (from entry-level to senior), evaluating candidates for both technical and cultural fit to ensure their seamless integration into the team.
  • Cultivate a high-performance, accountable culture by utilizing constructive feedback as a continuous, vital developmental tool.
  • Ensure the team understands and anticipates customer needs, and follows Thermo’s Quality Standards, and customer-specific site standards and procedures.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point and main contact for administrative and technical needs of the team.
  • Manage team members' compensation, time off, performance, and retention.
  • Ensure team members are effectively and strategically assigned to project tasks that align with both project needs and personal growth.
  • Establish a clear, unified vision for the team’s success, actively working to eliminate operational silos and champion the One Thermo Culture.
  • Resolve conflicts within the team promptly and professionally.
  • Commitment to continually developing technical leaders and future supervisors.

Project Management & Technical Leadership (~10% of Time)

  • Provide high-level technical guidance and oversight on complex control system designs, limiting direct, hands-on engineering work.
  • Collaborate with Sr. Engineers and Project Managers to accurately estimate the duration and difficulty of tasks, ensuring the team adheres to a realistic schedule and budget.
  • Delegate tasks effectively while supporting the team in execution.
  • Train, mentor, and guide co-workers during the start-up and commissioning of systems.
  • Understand project invoicing and projection procedures.
  • Continue to learn emerging controls technologies (e.g., Human-Machine Interface (HMI), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) applications, Communication Protocols).
  • Serve as a champion in understanding, practicing, and guiding others in the company's Quality Management System (QMS)

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science; Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or other pertinent curriculum combined with relevant technical experience.
  • Typically, 10+ years total technical and management experience
  • Proven Track Record: 3+ years as Engineering Team Lead or equivalent.

Travel required:

Thermo is dedicated to supporting the success of our engineering teams and customers. Therefore, overnight travel of up to 50% may be required.
