What are common challenges faced by EMV Specialists in their day-to-day work?

EMV Specialists often face the challenge of staying up-to-date with constantly evolving payment standards and ensuring that all systems are compliant with the latest security protocols. They may encounter integration issues between new EMV software and existing legacy payment systems, requiring strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Additionally, coordinating with cross-functional teams—including software developers, merchants, and banks—can present communication complexities. However, overcoming these challenges provides valuable experience and ensures the reliability and security of payment transactions in a rapidly changing industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Emv position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa) Specialist, you need expertise in payment card technology, EMV standards, and strong analytical skills, often backed by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with EMVCo specifications, payment terminal programming, and relevant certifications such as Certified Payments Professional (CPP) or PCI DSS compliance is highly valued. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and troubleshooting technical issues. These skills ensure accurate implementation, secure transactions, and seamless integration of EMV solutions in the financial technology industry.

What does EMV stand for?

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard, and Visa, which are the companies that developed the global standard for secure chip card payments. In the context of jobs, especially in finance or security roles, understanding EMV technology involves knowledge of chip card authentication and payment processing systems.

What is an EMV job?

An EMV job typically involves working with Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) chip technology used in payment cards and terminals. Professionals in this field focus on EMV compliance, security protocols, and transaction processing. They may work in industries like banking, finance, or payment processing to ensure secure and efficient payment transactions. Responsibilities often include testing, development, certification, and troubleshooting of EMV-related systems.

How much does it cost to get EMV certified?

The cost to become EMV certified varies depending on the certification program and the complexity of the payment systems involved, typically ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. Additional expenses may include training, testing, and equipment upgrades necessary to meet EMV standards and ensure secure card transactions.

How does EMV work?

EMV, in the context of a job role, typically refers to expertise in Europay, MasterCard, and Visa standards for chip card technology. It involves understanding how chip-enabled cards authenticate transactions securely through cryptographic processes, reducing fraud. EMV knowledge is valuable for roles in payment processing, security, and compliance, often requiring familiarity with card reader devices and certification standards.

What jobs can you get with EMS?

EMS (Emergency Medical Services) professionals can work as paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), or ambulance drivers. These roles involve providing pre-hospital emergency care, often requiring certification and training in CPR, first aid, and advanced medical procedures. Employment is typically in ambulance services, hospitals, or fire departments.

Job description

At Qu you'll find a fun, dynamic, and diverse culture that celebrates team and individual success. Our people are down to earth, trail blazin' folks who value innovation.
While mostly virtual, we collaborate closely to produce leading-edge software solutions much needed in the restaurant industry.
At Qu you will:
Support the Payments squad, which is responsible for core payment flows and integrations across our POS platform. This hybrid QA role combines strong functional testing skills with growing automation capabilities. You'll test APIs, payment processing flows, and integrated hardware like EMV terminals, ensuring our payment experience is fast, secure, and reliable.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working with backend systems and hardware, and experienced in validating payments and POS workflows in web-based environments.
Overview
  • Design and execute manual and automated test cases for payment APIs, UI flows, and EMV hardware interactions.
  • Perform functional, regression, and device-level testing of payment workflows (card present/card not present).
  • Validate RESTful APIs using Postman, including auth flows, error handling, and integration behaviors.
  • Participate in L3 certification process testing with payment partners and contribute to certification documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with QA, Product, and Engineering to define clear test plans, acceptance criteria, and edge cases.
  • Use browser dev tools to inspect request/response payloads; investigate logs and backend activity.
  • Support test automation using Playwright, Appium, and backend verification tools.
  • Assist in test data setup and backend verification using MongoDB, DynamoDB, and AWS tools.
  • Document defects clearly in JIRA and contribute to test coverage during sprints and releases.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, refinement, and reviews.

What we're looking for:
  • 3-5 years of QA experience in web or enterprise platforms, with a focus on payments or integrations.
  • Strong experience testing payment systems, including EMV terminal workflows and cloud-to-device communication.
  • Hands-on with Postman for API validation; familiarity with Swagger/OpenAPI specs.
  • Experience testing web UI across browsers, responsive layouts, and frontend/backend coordination.
  • Familiarity with basic backend testing using C# (xUnit, Moq) or ability to read/debug service code.
  • Understanding of EMV L3 certification processes and best practices.
  • EMV payment terminal certification experience is a strong plus.
  • Comfort working in hybrid environments involving cloud services and on-site devices.
  • Basic knowledge of MongoDB, DynamoDB, or similar databases.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Agile/Scrum development processes.
  • Strong documentation, collaboration, and bug reporting skills.

Bonus Experience
  • Automation experience with Playwright, Appium, or similar tools.
  • Experience with AWS-based environments, test containers, or device farms.
  • Previous QA experience in POS, payment gateway, or fintech domains.
  • Familiarity with terminal simulators, payment SDKs, or mock acquirer environments.
  • Experience testing offline/online fallback flows or device network behavior.
