Job Description
Position Description
Primary responsibility is for the pre-hospital emergency medical care of the citizens of Ben-Hill County. This includes both emergency and non-emergency medical care and transportation. Secondary responsibilities include assisting in the emergency and non-emergency care of patients within the Hospital. The EMT is an employee of Dorminy Medical Center and is expected to follow the policies and procedures of the facility. The EMT answers to the EMS director. In the absence of the EMS Director, he/she answers to the Assistant EMS Director. In reference to on-scene patient care situations the EMT answers to the Paramedic in charge.
Physical Demands
  • The EMT is required to lift, a minimum of 100 pounds, and carry and load into an ambulance all patients. Work in extreme conditions which may include: extreme temperatures, uneven or rough footing, slippery footing, and stairs or high angle positioning and low light situations.
  • The EMT must work in the back of a moving vehicle with sixty (60) inch headroom.
  • The EMT must be in physical condition to work at an accident scene in extreme conditions for an indefinite period of time, to extricate, treat, carry, load and transport the injured patient.
  • The EMT must be able to differentiate color as it pertains to patient conditions.
  • The EMT should have eyesight that is correctable to 20/20 vision.
  • The EMT must possess hearing, touch and smell senses that will enable them to adequately and safely meet the diagnostic needs of the patients served.
  • The position has a high level of exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Mental Demands
  • The EMT must be able work in a highly charged emotional atmosphere.
  • The EMT is able to recognize personal stress factors that may hinder their ability to function. These are not unexpected reactions and should be addressed. Events on duty that may cause these type stresses include; death or serious injury of a child, death or serious injury to a family member or friend, multiply injury or death situations.
  • Emanuel Medical Center offers a program to assist the EMT in dealing with these stresses with the help of trained personnel. Use of these resources is encouraged.
  • The duties, responsibilities and required skills for this job are outlined on the following pages and are the basis for competency and performance evaluations.
