Job description

EMT/Jail Medical Assistant

Under the direction of the Jail Health Coordinator, the EMT/Jail Medical Assistant's primary function is to oversee the medication administration program and to respond to medical situations and emergencies. Also conducts medical assessment of new inmates. Sees inmates responding to sick call and addresses medical issues by following Health Service protocols and physician orders. Assists physicians and other professionals as necessary. Hours will be intermittent and scheduled as necessary.

Applications are accepted until there are sufficient numbers of qualified applications or a qualified candidate is identified. This position could close at any time.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for ordering all prescriptions, organizing medication documentation sheets and repackaging of medications as the doctor orders change. Packages all over-the-counter meds. Processes all medications brought into the jail for inmates. Passes all medications for all designated distribution times.
  • Responds to inmate emergencies as well as staff emergencies, using the Jump Kit. Utilizing other resources EMS/Fire/Police as necessary.
  • Administers tests, documents and records test results.
  • Responsible for putting together medical charts. Assesses inmates after hours. Evaluates those with allergies. Identifies inmates with special medication needs for chronic placement. Initiates intake testing, ex) EKG, Respiratory testing.
  • Assesses medical needs in a face-to-face setting. Provides explanations of the mechanics of an injury or sickness. Provides treatment, possible outcomes, prevention and relapse. Assessment of further needs for treatment by physician or psychologist.
  • Orders supplies for restocking, disinfecting and cleaning of clinic work areas. Assists answering of clinic phones during hours of operation and enters/retrieves information from computer.
  • Works closely with security staff and is available to the Duty Sergeant to assist with all medical situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the curriculum as an Emergency Medical Technician. Minimum of a high school diploma or GED and one year of college or specialized training through a technical, vocational, trade or business school for an emergency medical technician, medical assistant or equivalent. Two to three years experience as an Emergency Medical Technician or equivalent. Must have a working knowledge of computers. Licensed as a Registered EMT in the State of Michigan and be able to maintain license. Must have a valid Michigan Drivers License with a good driving record. No felony criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Applicants will be required to go through a comprehensive background investigation covering schooling employment and home environment.

  • Ability to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to lift and carry patients of varying weights and sizes.
