Job description

The Young Life Africa communications team tells the stories of what Jesus is doing in and through the mission of Young Life in Africa. Young Life Africa East is seeking a Communications Specialist I. This position will work remotely with Divisional Communications Managers in Africa South and Africa West as well as with communications colleagues in the U.S. Position requires travel of up to six weeks/year, strong English writing skills, speaking, teaching, and digital skills, as well as strong virtual and in person collaboration skills. Candidate must be fluent in English, and fluency in either Swahili, Amharic, or Arabic is a bonus. We are looking for creative communications strengths, such as experience with graphic design, photography, or related disciplines. You must be comfortable working across cultures and time zones. Candidate must be a self starter and have a strong desire to lead and grow, with a particular emphasis on a growth mindset. Critical thinking skills are a must.

The Young Life Africa/Middle East international communications specialist will work on a range of projects including updating website content, research and donor communications. Coordinate and collaborate with communications specialist based in Africa and Young Life Africa/Middle East ministry assessment as needed.

Essential Duties:
Content Development

  • Source and edit blog posts and other ministry stories to post on the Young Life Africa website.
  • Assist with monthly Habari Gani (ministry update) emails.
  • Edit and review camp stories submitted by Young Life Africa/Middle East field staff to Young Life Africa/Middle East operational database.
  • Edit and review stories from Africa based communications and field staff.
  • Review country profiles and staff bios annually.
  • Create new staff bios and country profiles as needed.
  • Download and catalog photography and video assets from database and other sources.
  • Assist with website content creation in collaboration with Specialist III.
  • Assist with social media content creation and posting as necessary in collaboration with A/ME Specialist III.
  • Collaborate to develop content for annual projects: Impact Report, Celebration materials etc.
  • Research other sponsorship organization websites for content and donor communication ideas. Make recommendations.

Communications Support

  • Help onboard and work alongside the communications intern.
  • Review email marketing metrics and prepare reports and recommendations for Emma campaigns.
  • Collaborate with the development team on marketing campaigns.
  • Assist geography vice president(s) as needed for geography-specific communications.

Fundraising:

  • Because the position is 100% self funded, this is an ongoing responsibility.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Working Conditions:

  • Two - four domestic trips per year.
  • 2 - 3 international trips per year.
  • Full-time (40 hours per week)

Qualifications Required for the Job:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, or enrolled in an accredited program with less than one year until graduation, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in journalism and writing preferred.
  • Experience with social media preferred.
  • Photography and videography skills helpful.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and passion for Young Life Africa/Middle East.
  • Experience with Canva and Adobe helpful.
