Emi Design Engineer information

What is an EMI design engineer?

An EMI Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in managing and mitigating electromagnetic interference (EMI) in electronic systems and devices. Their work involves designing circuits, components, and enclosures to ensure compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. They use simulation tools, perform tests, and develop shielding or filtering solutions to prevent unwanted electromagnetic disturbances that could affect device performance or safety. EMI Design Engineers often work closely with hardware engineers and compliance teams throughout the product development process.

How does an EMI design engineer typically collaborate with other engineering teams during product development?

As an EMI Design Engineer, you will work closely with hardware, PCB layout, and mechanical engineering teams throughout the product development cycle. Your primary role is to identify potential electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues early on and recommend design modifications to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Collaboration often involves reviewing schematics, participating in design reviews, and coordinating EMI testing with the broader engineering team to troubleshoot and resolve complex interference problems. This cross-functional teamwork is crucial for integrating EMI solutions without impacting product performance or timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMI design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an EMI Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) principles, and circuit design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like CST Studio Suite or Ansys HFSS, and certifications such as iNARTE EMC Engineer, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help engineers address complex interference issues. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring products comply with regulatory standards and function reliably in electromagnetic environments.

What is the difference between Emi Design Engineer vs EMI Engineer?

SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

Full Time Frederick, MD, US

3 days ago Requisition ID: 1114

This position may be located in O'Fallon, MO, Indianapolis, IN, or Frederick, MD

Bascom Hunter is an advanced technology and product development company specializing in aerospace thermal management systems, environmental control systems (ECS), power electronics cooling, rugged electronic hardware, and advanced defense technologies. We develop innovative products for military and commercial aerospace customers from concept through production.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, development, and qualification of rugged aerospace mechanical and electromechanical products. This role supports the complete product lifecycle, including concept development, detailed design, structural analysis, prototype development, environmental qualification, and production transition.

The successful candidate will work closely with Systems, Electrical, Manufacturing, Test, Quality, and Program Management to deliver products that meet demanding military and aerospace performance, environmental, and reliability requirements.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design

  • Lead the design of aerospace mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through production.
  • Design rugged electronic enclosures, thermal management hardware, structural assemblies, and precision mechanical components.
  • Perform engineering trade studies balancing performance, weight, manufacturability, reliability, and cost.
  • Develop tolerance analyses, mechanical interfaces, fits, and assembly strategies.
  • Perform structural analysis using Analytical calculations and FEA to evaluate stress, vibration, fatigue, thermal effects, and structural integrity.
  • Develop margins of safety and correlate analytical models with test results.
  • Evaluate materials, fasteners, sealing methods, and mechanical interfaces.

Product Development

  • Support all phases of product development including requirements, design reviews, detailed design, prototype builds, qualification testing, and production transition.
  • Develop engineering documentation, manufacturing drawings, and design packages using SolidWorks and ASME Y14.5 GD&T.
  • Support Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and configuration management activities.
  • Design products to meet military and aerospace environmental requirements including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, altitude, humidity, and corrosion.
  • Integrate electronics, wiring, connectors, thermal management hardware, and mechanical structures into compact aerospace products.
  • Incorporate design practices supporting EMI/EMC, grounding, shielding, environmental sealing, and thermal management.

Manufacturing & Testing

  • Support DFM/DFA activities, prototype builds, qualification testing, and production.
  • Work with Manufacturing, Quality, Suppliers, and Test Engineering to resolve technical issues and improve product performance.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support technical proposals and engineering estimates.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 7 years of mechanical design experience developing aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability products.
  • Experience designing complex mechanical or electromechanical assemblies from concept through production.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks (or equivalent 3D CAD) and ANSYS Mechanical (or equivalent FEA).
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis, mechanics of materials, fatigue, vibration, tolerance analysis, materials, fasteners, and environmental sealing.
  • Experience creating manufacturing drawings compliant with ASME Y14.5.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with rugged electronic packaging and aerospace enclosure design.
  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC design practices, thermal management, pressure vessels, fluid systems, or refrigeration systems.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds, qualification testing, and production transition.
  • Experience with configuration management and engineering release processes.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong engineering judgment and hands‑on problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to independently own mechanical work packages from concept through production.
  • Effective collaboration across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Self‑motivated with a commitment to technical excellence, quality, and continuous improvement.
