Emc Lab Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EMC Lab Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EMC Lab Manager, you need expertise in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, strong knowledge of relevant standards (like CISPR, IEC, or FCC), and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with EMC test equipment, data analysis software, and quality management systems such as ISO/IEC 17025 is essential. Leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and ensuring accurate test results. These skills ensure regulatory compliance, efficient lab operations, and delivery of high-quality testing services to clients.

What are some common challenges faced by an EMC Lab Manager, and how can they be addressed?

EMC Lab Managers often face challenges such as managing multiple concurrent testing projects, ensuring compliance with evolving industry standards, and maintaining specialized equipment. Effective prioritization, clear communication with clients and internal teams, and keeping up-to-date with regulatory requirements are crucial for success in this role. Building a strong, well-trained team and implementing regular equipment calibration schedules can also help address these challenges and ensure the lab operates smoothly.

What is the difference between Emc Lab Manager vs Emc Test Technician?

AspectEmc Lab ManagerEmc Test Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, certifications in EMC testing preferredAssociate's or bachelor's degree in electronics or related field, relevant EMC testing certifications
Work EnvironmentSupervises lab operations, manages staff, oversees testing proceduresPerforms EMC testing, prepares test setups, documents results
Industry UsageUsed in electronics, telecommunications, aerospace industriesCommonly employed in electronics manufacturing, R&D labs

The Emc Lab Manager oversees the entire EMC testing lab, managing staff and ensuring compliance, while the Emc Test Technician focuses on executing tests and preparing reports. Both roles require EMC testing knowledge, but the manager has broader responsibilities including supervision and process management.

What are EMC Lab Managers?

EMC Lab Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the operations of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) laboratories. They ensure that electronic products and systems are tested for compliance with EMC standards and regulations, managing both the technical aspects and daily workflow of the lab. Their duties often include supervising staff, maintaining equipment, developing testing procedures, and ensuring accurate documentation of results. EMC Lab Managers play a critical role in helping companies bring products to market by ensuring they meet required safety and performance standards.

Job description

EMC/EMI TEST TECHNICIAN

As a member of our fast-paced Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) team, you will be responsible for ensuring avionics hardware performance across our fleet of vehicles (Dragon, Falcon, Starship, Human Landing System, etc.) through some of the harshest and varied electromagnetic environments imaginable. The E3 team at SpaceX performs exhaustive analysis, design, and test at the board, unit, subsystem, and system levels with extensive opportunity to interact with a vast array of rocket, spacecraft, and ground support equipment hardware and electronics. As one of the few teams required to interface with the design, manufacturing, integration, and mission operations teams, we play a critical role in the development of our systems. These systems support SpaceX's goals of developing broadband satellite internet and safe, reliable, inexpensive, and innovative access to space with the fundamental goal of expanding human space exploration capabilities and establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon and Mars.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform EMC/EMI emission and immunity testing of electrical systems and its components for consumer and commercial applications
  • Read, interpret, and work from free-form drawings as well as from controlled documentation and processes
  • Design and fabricate electro-mechanical assemblies, harnesses and test fixtures from conceptual drawings
  • Operate a spectrum analyzer, VNA, power meter, high-power amplifier, and oscilloscope
  • Perform antenna and shielding effectiveness measurements
  • Independently perform verifications and document results in a clear, precise and complete manner
  • Troubleshoot complex problems independently with minimal direction
  • Support engineers and test management with standardized testing and R&D projects
  • Maintain test equipment and test facilities and oversee the equipment calibration process

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in an electronics discipline or 2+ years of direct work experience in electronics
  • 2+ years of experience performing testing of consumer electronics or electrical hardware
  • 2+ years of experience fabricating test fixtures, harnesses or electro-mechanical assemblies

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with FCC Part 15, Part 25, EN55032, EN 55024/35, EN 61000, MIL-STD-1541, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, DO-160G specifications
  • Experience in a fast-paced test environment with flight hardware
  • Able to support R&D efforts in addition to standardized testing
  • Familiarity with semi-anechoic chamber specifications, design and maintenance
  • Experience with lab accreditation for self-certification purposes (i.e. ISO/IEC 17025, A2LA, or NVLAP)
  • Able to adapt to constantly changing work assignments and fast-paced work environment
  • Able to program simple scripts in python for test logging and control
  • Able to efficiently draft fixtures, tools, structures, and electrical schematics using a CAD system
  • Able to troubleshoot unit and test rack issues with little to no supervision
  • Able to author and redline clear and concise test procedures, build procedures, and process instructions
  • Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and teamwork skills
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics (engineering drawings, circuit layouts, and parts lists), cable harnesses (wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and parts lists), and mechanical assemblies (mechanical drawings and parts lists)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Repetitive assembly operations, grasping, standing, lifting, bending, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones
