What does an embedded systems power electronics engineer do?

An Embedded Systems Power Electronics Engineer designs and develops electronic systems that combine embedded computing with power electronics, such as motor drives, power converters, and control systems. They are responsible for creating hardware and software solutions that efficiently manage and control electrical power in various applications, from automotive and renewable energy to industrial automation. Their role involves circuit design, firmware development, system integration, and testing to ensure reliability and performance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and staying current with emerging technologies are also key aspects of the job.

What are some typical challenges that embedded systems power electronics engineers face when integrating hardware and software components?

Embedded Systems Power Electronics Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between hardware and firmware, managing electromagnetic interference, and optimizing system efficiency under various load conditions. Balancing thermal management with compact hardware design can also be demanding. Close collaboration with PCB designers, firmware developers, and test engineers is essential to address these integration issues early in the design process and to achieve reliable, high-performance systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded systems power electronics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Systems Power Electronics Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, embedded systems design, and power electronics, usually supported by a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE simulators, PCB design software, and microcontroller programming, as well as relevant certifications like IPC or IEEE standards, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable, efficient systems and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams in complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Embedded Systems Power Electronics Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Systems Power Electronics EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical/Electronic Engineering; certifications like PE or PMP are commonBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning power electronics for embedded systems, often in consumer electronics, automotive, or industrial sectorsDeveloping electrical systems and circuits for various products, including power distribution and control systems
Industry UsageUsed in embedded device development, IoT, automotive, and roboticsApplied in power systems, industrial automation, and large-scale electrical infrastructure

Both roles require strong electrical engineering fundamentals, but the Embedded Systems Power Electronics Engineer focuses on integrating power electronics within embedded systems, while the Electrical Design Engineer works on broader electrical system design. The choice depends on whether your interest lies in embedded device integration or large-scale electrical systems.

Job description

Company Overview

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a talented power electronics engineer to join our team designing electric aircraft. This engineer will work closely with mechanical, software, and other cross-functional teams and contribute towards the design of prototype motor-control inverters and DC/DCs from 0.5-200 kW. This is a hands-on, on-site position based in San Carlos, CA. Engineers are responsible for seeing their projects through from concept design to delivery and support of hardware. Optimizing designs for reliability, weight, and efficiency will be a focus.

Responsibilities
  • Create clear and readable schematics for power electronics boards
  • Create optimized and reliable layout designs
  • Component selection for minimum mass and maximum reliability
  • Create optimized and reliable layout designs
  • Write board bring-up test plans, execute them and collect data for new boards
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to optimize placement of high power modules/components and bus bars
  • Support manufacturing by troubleshooting critical production issues and designing test procedures
  • Participate in detailed root cause and failure analysis
Required
  • B.S. in electrical engineering or related discipline
  • Strong EE fundamentals, including:
    • 3+ years designing and developing power electronics, in particular, inverters for driving 50kW to 200kW motors
    • Understanding of motor control theory for surface and interior permanent magnet machines
    • Schematic capture and PCB design
    • Experience with component selection
    • Completed (designed/built/tested) high voltage/high power designs
  • Great communication skills
  • Ability to be onsite regularly in San Carlos, CA
Desired
  • M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline with a focus in power electronics
  • Experience working in aerospace or automotive industries
