What is an embedded systems integration engineer?

Embedded Systems Integration Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and optimize the integration of hardware and software components within embedded systems. They ensure that different modules, such as microcontrollers, sensors, and firmware, work together seamlessly to achieve the desired system functionality. Their role often involves troubleshooting, testing, and validating embedded solutions across a variety of industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. These engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver reliable and efficient embedded products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded systems integration engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Systems Integration Engineer, you need strong skills in embedded programming (C/C++), hardware-software integration, and a relevant degree in electrical, computer, or software engineering. Familiarity with tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, version control systems (e.g., Git), and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) being advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable system functionality, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration in complex embedded projects.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded systems integration engineers during cross-functional collaboration?

Embedded Systems Integration Engineers often work closely with hardware, software, and testing teams to ensure system components function seamlessly together. A common challenge is bridging communication gaps between teams with different technical backgrounds and priorities, especially when integrating components from various vendors or legacy systems. Effective collaboration requires proactive communication, thorough documentation, and a strong understanding of both hardware constraints and software requirements. Engineers in this role frequently facilitate troubleshooting sessions and coordinate iterative testing to address integration issues efficiently.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the integration of drive units, batteries, inverters, displays, and various low voltage electronics in vehicle systems.

  • Coordinate with hardware teams and oversee vehicle bring-up activities across all vehicle builds.

  • Support the development, testing, and verification of system-level functions, including firmware and software integration, bug triage, and automated test processes.

Job description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

ALSO is looking for a Staff Systems Integration Engineer to lead the integration of drive units, batteries, inverters, displays, and various low voltage electronics.

What You'll Do

  • Coordinate with hardware teams and lead vehicle bring-up activities across all vehicle builds

  • Oversee the integration of firmware and software components developed by cross-functional teams, ensuring seamless operation and compatibility

  • Support the triage of system hardware and software bugs on the vehicle, escalating based on impact to users and the overall program

  • Support the development of test cases and verification of system-level functions across multiple mediums (benches, labcars, and vehicles), including Feature Release Readiness and regression testing to ensure feature stability and performance

  • Support cross-functional development efforts, identifying and managing issues found during development testing

  • Participate in architectural and software technical discussions and develop technical solutions

  • Collect and analyze CAN data, physical measurement data acquisition, and emulated module data

  • Work with the team on automated tools written in Python, C, or Simulink to create vehicle software packages

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of automated test processes, focusing on efficiency and scalability, and help build a test asset strategy to ensure the availability, deployment, and performance of testing resources

  • Own and maintain firmware versions for test resources using FOTA campaigns and proprietary re-flash tools, and identify test tooling needs on the vehicle and cloud to support testing, validation, and data logging

What You'll Bring

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

  • 6+ years of experience working with electro-mechanical system integration

  • Demonstrated understanding of embedded systems development lifecycle, including hardware, software (embedded operating systems and programming), testing, and implementation

  • Comfort working with embedded systems, including reading source code and reasoning about state machines

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, or Python, plus numerical programming/scripting experience (Pandas, MATLAB)

  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Deployment systems and networking protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet)

  • Experience building cross-platform software with source control (Git) and tools such as Grafana, Bamboo, JIRA, and Bazel

  • Experience with collaboration tools like JIRA and Confluence, and requirements management tools like JAMA, Polarion, or DOORS

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced development environment, with experience with AWS a bonus

The salary for this position ranges from $190,000 - $220,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.
