What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics, computer engineering, and programming languages like C/C++, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with embedded development tools, real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller architectures, and certifications such as ARM or IoT-related credentials are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in multidisciplinary environments. These skills and qualities are essential for designing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that meet stringent technical and industry requirements.

What are some common challenges an Embedded System Engineer faces when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Embedded System Engineers often collaborate with hardware designers, software developers, and project managers, which can present challenges such as aligning timelines, integrating software with evolving hardware prototypes, and ensuring consistent communication across disciplines. Navigating these complexities requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Successful engineers frequently participate in cross-functional meetings and use collaborative tools to track progress and address integration issues early, helping to ensure a smooth development process.

What are Embedded System Engineers?

Embedded System Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain computer systems that are integrated into larger mechanical or electrical systems. These systems, known as embedded systems, are dedicated to specific tasks and are commonly found in devices like cars, medical equipment, home appliances, and industrial machines. Engineers in this field work with both hardware and software components, ensuring that the system operates efficiently, reliably, and safely within its intended environment. Their responsibilities often include programming microcontrollers, optimizing system performance, and troubleshooting hardware-software interactions.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded System EngineerFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like Certified Embedded Systems EngineerBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering; certifications like Certified Firmware Developer
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing embedded hardware/software for devices like IoT, automotive, consumer electronicsWriting low-level code to optimize firmware for microcontrollers and embedded devices
Employer & Industry UsageElectronics manufacturers, automotive, consumer electronics, aerospaceConsumer electronics, IoT devices, medical devices, automotive

Embedded System Engineers focus on designing integrated hardware and software systems, while Firmware Engineers specialize in developing low-level code that runs directly on hardware. Both roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and focus area within embedded development.

Job description

Role Summary

In this role, you will lead the control architecture and system behavior of advanced AC-DC and DC-DC power conversion platforms across low- and medium-voltage applications. You will define and drive control strategies for complex converter topologies, including multilevel and resonant systems. As a Staff engineer, you will own system-level control decisions, set technical direction across programs, and ensure performance targets are achieved from concept through production. You will work across modeling, digital control development, embedded implementation, hardware integration, and validation to deliver robust, scalable, high-performance power conversion solutions. You will also mentor engineers and raise the technical standard of the control organization

Responsibilities:

  • Own control architecture for advanced power conversion systems across AC-DC and DC-DC platforms.

  • Own system-level dynamic performance (stability, bandwidth, transient response, robustness, efficiency) from concept through production.

  • Drive control strategy across interacting power stages and ensure stable operation under all operating conditions.

  • Define digital control execution requirements and ensure real-time implementation meets system performance targets.

  • Lead system-level stability analysis and performance closure under aggressive development timelines.

  • Establish validation methodology and acceptance criteria, including frequency response, transient testing, and fault handling robustness.

  • Lead complex root-cause investigations across hardware, firmware, sensing, and protection domains.

  • Drive control-related risk assessment (DFMEA) and mitigation planning across development programs.

  • Ensure control solutions scale across product variants and future platforms.

  • Influence system-level trade-offs across topology, sensing, control strategy, performance, cost, and power density.

  • Elevate control engineering standards through rigorous design reviews, modeling discipline, and mentorship.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience with strong specialization in power electronics and control systems.

  • 5+ years of experience designing and deploying digital control for power converters in commercial or industrial applications.

  • Demonstrated ownership of control architecture or system-level dynamic performance in complex power conversion systems (e.g., multi-stage, high-power, grid-connected, or modular platforms).

  • Strong expertise in advanced converter control, including resonant, multilevel, or other high-performance topologies across isolated and non-isolated systems.

  • Experience with solid-state transformer (SST) architectures or tightly integrated multi-stage AC-DC/DC-DC systems is strongly preferred.

  • Deep command of control theory, including multi-loop stability analysis, loop interaction mitigation, nonlinear system behavior, and dynamic modeling.

  • Proven experience implementing and guiding high-performance real-time digital control on embedded platforms (DSP/MCU/SoC).

  • Strong proficiency in embedded C and ability to review and influence real-time control implementation decisions.

  • Extensive hands-on laboratory experience debugging high-power systems and leading system-level validation and performance closure.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex, cross-domain technical challenges and drive cross-functional trade-off decisions.

Bonus Qualifications:ย

  • Exposure to medium-voltage power electronics systems.

  • Experience with multilevel or modular converter architectures.

  • Experience with bidirectional power flow control.

  • Experience supporting products from R&D through production release.

  • Experience contributing to patents or novel control techniques.

Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.ย

Salary: $175,000-$210,000/annual DOE and location
