What does an embedded software verification engineer do?

An Embedded Software Verification Engineer is responsible for ensuring that embedded software systems function correctly and meet design requirements. They create and execute tests, analyze results, and identify software defects in embedded systems such as automotive controllers, medical devices, or consumer electronics. This role typically involves working closely with software developers and hardware engineers to review code, develop test plans, and use debugging tools to validate the software’s functionality, performance, and safety. Their work is crucial for delivering reliable products that operate safely and efficiently in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software verification engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Verification Engineer, a strong background in embedded systems, programming (C/C++), and software testing methodologies is essential, typically supported by a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, debuggers, oscilloscopes, and verification frameworks, as well as certifications like ISTQB, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help engineers identify issues and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the development of reliable, safe, and high-quality embedded systems in safety-critical industries.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded software verification engineers during the validation process?

Embedded Software Verification Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited hardware availability, rapidly changing requirements, and integration issues with multiple hardware and software components. Debugging in an embedded environment can be more complex due to constrained system resources and limited visibility into the hardware-software interactions. Collaborating closely with both hardware and firmware teams is essential to quickly identify and resolve defects, making strong communication and problem-solving skills crucial for success in this role.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Verification Engineer vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Software Verification EngineerEmbedded Software Developer
Primary FocusVerifying and validating embedded software to ensure quality and reliabilityDesigning, coding, and implementing embedded software solutions
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of testing tools, verification processes, embedded systems, certifications like ISTQBProficiency in programming languages (C, C++), embedded systems, software development certifications
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, development teams, quality assurance departmentsDevelopment teams, R&D labs, product engineering

Our 115,000 colleagues serve people in more than 160 countries.JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Opportunity

The Senior Software Verification Engineer will plan, develop, and execute software verification activities for regulated medical device systems and mobile applications. This individual will perform hands-on manual testing for software on physical devices or virtual interfaces, while simultaneously building automated tests . The ideal candidate ensures end-to-end verification, 100% requirements traceability, and robust test coverage to deliver high-quality, compliant connected-health software under rigorous medical device regulations. Because this role requires hands-on interaction with physical medical device hardware, this is a fully on-site position.

What You'll Work On

  • Hybrid Testing: Balance manual exploration of physical medical device hardware with the expansion of automated regression suites.
  • Manual & Exploratory Testing: Author and execute complex manual test cases for physical UIs, touchscreens, and exploratory hardware edge-case scenarios.
  • Mobile & UI Testing: Execute tests on physical device screens and iOS/Android applications to verify UI/UX, connectivity, and data synchronization.
  • Automation Engineering: Design, implement, and scale automated testing suites using frameworks like Squish, Appium, XCUITest, or Espresso.
  • Matrix Management: Manage and test across physical mobile device matrices to ensure software compatibility across varying OS versions and screen sizes.
  • Wireless Verification: Verify robust wireless communication between mobile applications and physical medical devices using BLE, Wi-Fi, Cellular or NFC.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Lead contractors and junior engineers while collaborating closely with developers to articulate, log, and resolve software bugs.
  • Write and maintain comprehensive verification test plans, test protocols, and test reports.
  • Establish and maintain rigorous 100% requirements traceability matrices.
  • Ensure all verification activities strictly align with medical device software lifecycle standards (IEC 62304), quality management systems (ISO 13485), and FDA guidelines.
  • Document defects with clear, reproducible steps, technical logs, and code-level context where applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Work Location: Ability to work full-time on-site to directly access physical hardware, test benches, and wireless environments.
  • Experience: 5+ years of software verification experience, specifically within the medical device, digital health, or a similarly regulated industry.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Solid understanding of IEC 62304 and FDA design controls for medical device software.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to interface effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in Python (for test scripting and automation tooling), alongside experience in languages relevant to mobile/embedded development such as Java, C and C++.
  • Automation: Proven experience building automated testing frameworks for mobile (iOS/Android) or embedded systems using Squish or Appium.
  • Protocols: Strong technical understanding of wireless protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi, Cellular, NFC).
