Embedded Software Verification Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Software Verification Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Verification Engineer, a strong background in embedded systems, programming (C/C++), and software testing methodologies is essential, typically supported by a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, debuggers, oscilloscopes, and verification frameworks, as well as certifications like ISTQB, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help engineers identify issues and work collaboratively in cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the development of reliable, safe, and high-quality embedded systems in safety-critical industries.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Verification Engineer vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Software Verification EngineerEmbedded Software Developer
Primary FocusVerifying and validating embedded software to ensure quality and reliabilityDesigning, coding, and implementing embedded software solutions
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of testing tools, verification processes, embedded systems, certifications like ISTQBProficiency in programming languages (C, C++), embedded systems, software development certifications
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, development teams, quality assurance departmentsDevelopment teams, R&D labs, product engineering

While both roles require embedded systems knowledge and programming skills, the Embedded Software Verification Engineer primarily focuses on testing, validation, and ensuring software quality, whereas the Embedded Software Developer concentrates on creating and implementing embedded software solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Software Verification Engineers during the validation process?

Embedded Software Verification Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited hardware availability, rapidly changing requirements, and integration issues with multiple hardware and software components. Debugging in an embedded environment can be more complex due to constrained system resources and limited visibility into the hardware-software interactions. Collaborating closely with both hardware and firmware teams is essential to quickly identify and resolve defects, making strong communication and problem-solving skills crucial for success in this role.

What does an Embedded Software Verification Engineer do?

An Embedded Software Verification Engineer is responsible for ensuring that embedded software systems function correctly and meet design requirements. They create and execute tests, analyze results, and identify software defects in embedded systems such as automotive controllers, medical devices, or consumer electronics. This role typically involves working closely with software developers and hardware engineers to review code, develop test plans, and use debugging tools to validate the software’s functionality, performance, and safety. Their work is crucial for delivering reliable products that operate safely and efficiently in real-world environments.

Job description

UAV Embedded Software Engineer
The Opportunity:
Booz Allen is building the next generation of tactical robotic systems for defense, national security, and public safety missions, establishing a new center of engineering excellence to design and deliver an entirely new class of mission-ready platforms. We focus on delivering real systems with real capabilities, grounded in operator-centered design, rapid field-driven iteration, and U.S.-based manufacturing. As an embedded software engineer, you understand how to create and maintain the critical software that enables these systems to function, writing and optimizing code that bridges hardware and software, enabling reliable communication and performance.
We are entering a new phase of growth and seeking a highly skilled Senior Embedded Engineer to help shape the next wave of autonomous, semi-autonomous, and precision-flight systems. In this role, you will support system architecture, parts selection, validation test design, and full hardware-software development cycles across multiple product lines. You'll write, test, and refine embedded code, reverse engineer software to support hardware functionality, configure solutions across various platforms, and collaborate with cybersecurity specialists to ensure secure and resilient systems. You'll also work closely with technical leads to troubleshoot operational issues and support field deployments, contributing directly to the systems that protect our service members, communities, and country. Due to the nature of work performed within this facility, U.S. citizenship is required.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 2+ years of experience with embedded Software support for development of PX4-based UAV systems and ground control stations (GCS)
  • 2+ years of experience with C++ based software development to modify or augment the PX4 flight controller and develop applications for the PX4 hardware
  • 2+ years of experience with UAV control and monitoring through the development of dashboards, interfaces, telemetry displays, and configuration in C++ with the Qt framework
  • 2+ years of experience with hardware abstraction layers, middleware components, and interface elements using MAVLink
  • Knowledge of SIL and HIL testing of UAV systems and components
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree or 5+ years of experience in software engineering in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:
  • 2+ years of experience with computer vision, such as OpenCV, camera models, and camera calibrations
  • 2+ years of experience working with UAS platforms and PX4-based flight controllers
  • 2+ years of experience working with software containerization methods and utilities such as Docker and Docker-compose
  • Experience leading software development efforts following DevOps principles, including Agile, CI/CD, and test-driven development, and using automation tools, including pipelines and runners
  • Experience briefing DoD leaders and customers, and collecting requirements for defense missions
  • Experience with Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI) for UAS and Open Mission Systems (OMS)
  • Experience with QGroundControl
  • Top Secret clearance
  • Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics preferred; Doctorate degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics a plus
  • FAA Small UAS Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification
