What is an embedded software engineer?

Embedded Software Engineers design, develop, and optimize software that runs on specialized hardware or embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. In the context of relocation, this job may require moving to a particular city or country where the employer's development center or project site is located. Companies often support relocation by assisting with moving expenses, visa processing, and settling-in services. Relocating can offer exposure to new technologies, cultures, and professional growth opportunities. It's important to inquire about the specific relocation package and support provided by the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++, real-time operating systems, microcontroller architecture, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems (like Git), and often certifications in embedded systems or IoT are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across hardware and software teams. These skills ensure robust, efficient, and reliable product development in complex embedded environments.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Engineer Relocation vs Embedded Software Developer?

AspectEmbedded Software Engineer RelocationEmbedded Software Developer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like C, C++, or RTOS are commonSame as Embedded Software Engineer Relocation
Work EnvironmentTypically in manufacturing, automotive, or consumer electronics companies; involves relocation to different sites or regionsSimilar environments; focus on developing and testing embedded systems
Industry UsageUsed across automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, and industrial automationCommonly used in the same industries for software development roles

Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, with the main difference being that Embedded Software Engineer Relocation emphasizes geographic mobility, often involving relocation to different company sites or regions. The core responsibilities and industry applications are largely overlapping, making them closely related roles in embedded systems development.

Are embedded software engineers in demand?

Embedded software engineers are in high demand due to the growth of IoT, automotive, medical devices, and consumer electronics industries. Skills in C, C++, and real-time operating systems, along with experience in hardware integration, increase employability in this field.

What are the common challenges faced by embedded software engineers when relocating for a new position?

Relocating as an Embedded Software Engineer often involves adapting to new company processes, development tools, and hardware platforms, which can vary significantly between organizations. Additionally, engineers may need to quickly build relationships with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers and quality assurance specialists, to ensure seamless product development. Familiarizing oneself with local industry standards or regulatory requirements is also crucial, especially if relocating internationally. Proactively seeking mentorship and participating in team meetings can help smooth the transition and accelerate integration into the new work environment.

Job description

Embedded Software Engineer (Automated Test & Fleet Systems)

Location: Foster City, CA (100% In-Person / On-Site)

Pay Rate: $99.26 USD / Hour

Job Type: Full-Time Contract

Industry: Autonomous Mobility & Advanced Robotics

About the Role

Comrise is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to support a leading autonomous ride-hailing company in Foster City, CA. In this high-visibility role, you will work directly with the Autonomy Hardware Systems Verification & Validation (V&V) team to develop low-latency embedded software, sensor emulators, and Python-based automation frameworks for safety-critical hardware testing infrastructure.

If you thrive at the intersection of C++ development, Linux systems, and hardware-software integration, this is an exceptional opportunity to help validate cutting-edge autonomous vehicle platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect & Build Production C++ Code: Design, implement, and maintain high-performance, production-quality C++ applications on embedded Linux, targeting both user-space and kernel-space low-latency execution.
  • Develop Test Automation: Build scalable, Python-based test automation frameworks (Pytest) and tools to streamline integration, execution, and performance validation.
  • Hardware & Sensor Emulation: Build and expand hardware/software sensor emulators while extending existing test assets and validation frameworks.
  • Hardware Interfacing: Integrate embedded software with FPGA-based and ECU hardware using protocols such as Ethernet, CAN, SPI, and I2C.
  • V&V & System Troubleshooting: Execute end-to-end verification strategies, perform system-level diagnostics, and debug complex hardware/software issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, with 4+ years of hands-on industry experience.
  • C++ Expertise: Strong proficiency in C++ focusing on low-latency, high-performance applications in Linux user space (kernel-space experience is a strong plus).
  • Linux Systems: Extensive background in Linux system-level programming and networking.
  • Python & Tools: Proficiency with Python for automation/testing (Pytest), Git version control, build systems (Bazel), and unit testing frameworks (GTest).
  • Embedded Protocols: Hands-on experience with embedded interfaces including Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and CAN.

Bonus / Preferred Skills

  • Linux kernel development and device driver implementation for ARM cores using Xilinx SDK or MPSoC platforms.
  • Experience with Yocto, Petalinux, or FPGA development (SystemVerilog / HDL verification).
  • Familiarity with high-speed protocols (PCIe, MIPI CSI-2), Precision Time Protocol (PTP / IEEE 1588), or Automotive Ethernet.
  • Ability to read and analyze electronic schematics and PCB designs.

Why Apply?

  • Competitive Compensation: Earn a top-tier rate of $99.26/hr.
  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Work directly with state-of-the-art autonomous mobility hardware and sensor suites.
  • Impact: Your code will directly validate safety-critical infrastructure that powers the future of autonomous transit.
