Full-time

Posted 5 days ago

Job description

We are looking to hire a Co-Op starting in January 2027 and working through July 2027.

Storion Energy is a joint venture between Stryten Energy and Largo Inc. and is at the forefront of commercializing Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) within the United States. Largo is a vanadium mining company with the only western-friendly vanadium mine in the world, located in Brazil. Stryten is a leading lead-acid battery manufacturer supplying energy storage solutions to the automotive, industrial, and stationary power markets.

Storion Energy was formed from the VRFB divisions of each company and is focused on supplying specialty VRFB components to the long-duration energy storage (LDES) market. We are uniquely positioned to drive down costs to allow new entrants into the flow battery market, which will drive competition with lithium-based LDES products.

VRFB LDES products help address renewable energy intermittency issues, provide grid resiliency, and enable a cleaner electricity grid.

This position pays $25 per hour and requires on-site daily work in Billerica, MA.

The Mechanical Engineering Co-op will support Storion’s product development team with a focus on our battery stack development needs. This individual will support product design initiatives, prototype stack assembly and quality control, stack power assembly testing, and work on other projects as needed.

Storion’s product development facility is located in Billerica, MA, and we are seeking a full-time Co-op to support our cutting-edge product development efforts. This is an in-person role, and the successful candidate is expected to be in the office 5 days per week.

The Mechanical Engineering Co-op will work under the direct supervision and guidance of Senior Engineers in support of Engineering projects. The Co-op will contribute to these projects by performing a wide range of assignments, which may include:
  • Working on product development, including concept development and testing
  • Hands-on testing in the electrochemical lab and shop floor
  • Operating pilot-scale sub-scale and full-scale equipment and machinery
  • Data collection, processing, and analysis
  • Designing and modeling stack parts, GD&T, and subassemblies within SolidWorks
  • Generating and modifying manufacturing drawings and applying GD&T
  • Performing tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Performing preliminary structural analysis within SolidWorks
  • Performing design calculations related to strength, temperature, and flow for the stack parts
  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly
  • Assembly, testing, debugging, and documentation for mechanical fixtures and devices
  • Experimental design (DOE)
  • Root cause analysis
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
  • Many more exciting and challenging experiences

  • Working towards BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • You must have housing and transportation to our Billerica, MA location. Public transportation is not available to our office.
  • You must be able and willing to work with battery electrolyte, which is acidic and requires wearing PPE (lab coat, gloves, safety glasses or goggles, and other job-specific PPE)
  • Ability to lift 30-pound boxes of parts
  • Students entering their second or third Co-op preferred
We expect our Co-ops to be hands-on self-starters who can take a project from start to finish with ease. The successful candidate should already have excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills that can be applied to cross-functional teams. The individual should be skilled at problem identification, prototyping and iterative design, validation testing, and troubleshooting.

Our environment is casual but professional, and our Co-ops are exposed to senior-level leaders. We don’t want our Co-ops to sit on the sidelines – we want you to challenge us and provide creative ways to approach projects. As a teammate, you will gain hands-on experience working on meaningful projects, network with engineers across the organization, learn what it is like to be an engineer at Storion Energy, and finally, make a lasting impact while developing lifelong skills and competencies to elevate your future career.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship now or at any time in the future.
